In his critically acclaimed bestseller Rain of Gold, Victor Villase-or brought his mother's family vividly to life. In Wild Steps Of Heaven, he turns to his father's family, the Villase-ors. Against a vivid backdrop of love and war, magic and heroism, the author breathes life into his father's people--and in particular, the Villase-or women*Margarita, the indomitable matriarch who was swept away by Don Juan Jesus Villase-or on the eve of the Mexican revolution*their beautiful daughters, who find strength and endurance in their mother's faith, and searing passion amidst the turmoil of war. But it is little Juan, the youngest son, through whose eyes this tumultuous saga unfolds. Juan would learn from his brother Jose, a hero of the revolution, how to be a man; and from his beloved mother, how to live and love con gusto y amor. A story of madness and miracles, rage and redemption, In Wild Steps Of Heaven creates a riveting portrait of an extraordinary family and the country whose earth gave them roots.

Poetry. Winner of the 2020 International Book Award for Poetry. Winner of a 2019 Foreword INDIES Award for Poetry. Winner of the 2020 Indie Reader Discovery Award for Poetry. In HIJITO--selected by Eduardo C. Corral as winner of the 2018 Broken River Prize--Carlos Andrés Gómez writes of brutality and beauty with the same urgency and with a truth that burns readily; it is a collection of survival instincts. As a vital and tender exploration and deconstruction of contemporary society, his poetry engages with America's ever-changing landscape and the ways in which race, gender, and violence coalesce. Called powerful, truthful, and sublime by Cornel West, Gómez's words are a necessary paean to hope and courage in the modern world. One loss makes you feel all the other losses, writes Carlos Andrés Gómez in this searing and inquisitive collection. His attentiveness to language and to pain is unflinching. Craft and empathy are inseparable; lyrical pleasures resonate with tenderness and sorrow. The poems pull something usable from // the wreckage of performative masculinity, police brutality, and displacement. And what's usable from misery? Gómez's deft control of language--the syntax is nimble, the diction is zoetic--brings us close to the boundless resilience that helps us survive, change.--Eduardo C. Corral Gómez makes an impressive debut in this collection, singing of family, bullets, survival and smoke. This hijito is a tiny growl / at first / that blossomed / into a wail.--Tyehimba Jess, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry Striking, searching, and serious. Carlos Andrés Gómez poems often leap landscapes beyond the West and ask us to consider the history we have been taught, how we speak it and carry it in our bodies. There is an earned depth and urgency to Gómez as a poet.--Raymond Antrobus, Rathbones Folio Prize winner

“Children and adults alike will enjoy Nasario’s brilliant telling of the events that were part of his growing up. As I read the stories I heard Nasario’s voice and I could see clearly the people and places he describes. I was reminded that the stories our grandparents told not only entertained us, they taught us valuable lessons. “The magic of storytelling is still with us. At home or in the classroom, stories such as these will spark the imagination and encourage reading.”—Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me, Ultima The popular cuentos that parents and grandparents in rural New Mexico once upon a time told their children are a rich source of the folklore of the region and offer satisfying entertainment. In this collection of bilingual stories about the Río Puerco Valley, where Nasario García grew up, he shares the traditions, myths, and stories of his homeland. He recounts stories of the evil eye and rooster racing, the Wailing Woman and the punishing of the santos. Preceding each tale is García’s brief explanation of the history and culture behind the story.
