Excerpt from High Masonry Dam Design IT is the practice at Columbia University to require of the third-year students in the Department of Civil Engineer ing, the execution of the design of a masonry dam, and to aid them in this problem they have heretofore been furnished with Notes on the Theory and Design of High Masonry Dams, prepared some years ago by Prof. Burr of the Department, and having for their basis the method as set forth by Mr. Edward Wegmann. This procedure with which Wegmann is credited, and which was developed through the investigations undertaken in connection with the Aqueduct Commission of the city of New York, for the purpose of determining a correct cross-section for the Quaker Bridge dam, resulted in the first direct method for calculating the cross-section of such structures and is essentially a development of the Rankine theory. Excerpt from Masonry Dam Design: Including High Masonry DamsIn this revision the authors have attempted to amplify some of the features which, in the earlier edition, were little more than touched upon. Chapters on the Overfall and Arched types of masonry dams have been added, together with cross-sections of a selected series of masonry dams chronologically arranged. The last are for the purpose of comparison and showing the development of the masonry dam from the time of the massive Spanish type to the present. The design of low and medium-sized as well as that of high-masonry dams, may be prosecuted according to the theory and methods in this work, as general expressions have been written wherever possible. It was considered best to indicate this in the title while the original page captions remain the same. The authors are indebted to Miss Bessie N. MacDonald, A.B., for assistance in verifying the more difficult mathematical derivations for the Arched Dam. Acknowledgment is also made to Mr. Alfred D. Flinn, Member American Society of Civil Engineers, who had kindly furnished one of the authors with a set of cross-sections of dams, a number of which are shown in the series in Appendix III.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Construction of Masonry Dams Many volumes have been written upon the design of masonry dams; the principal features and methods have been reduced to what may be called an accepted, standard practice. It is hoped that the present work will supply the details of construction and supervision which have not been adequately covered heretofore. For a number of years descriptions of particular dams have appeared in the engi neering periodicals, but little attention has been given in these articles to the general principles of construction involved. Within the limitations of this book it was not possible to cover the subject in all of its ramifications. Earth work, rock excavation, cement, pumping and many similar subjects have been passed over entirely either because adequate treatment was impossible in such a work as this, or because they are fully covered in other books. Other subjects, such as power, are touched upon in the most ele mentary manner and solely from the point of view of the man en gaged in dam construction. Thus the material upon source and dis tribution of power are mere suggestions, while the subjects of power required, cost of power, etc., are treated somewhat more fully. It is probably true that for one dam actually built, several are projected and more or less thoroughly examined. The inception and promotion of such projects and their examination by financiers, result in a number of engineers being called upon for estimates of cost. Such estimates must often be prepared within a limited time and for a limited expenditure. To facilitate the rapid and reasonably accu rate treatment of such estimates, a chapter has been added on this subject, and this, in fact, was one of the chief purposes of the book. It is hoped that the cost figures will prove a reliable and useful guide for estimates. Labor costs, as always, must be used with caution.
