Do you start projects that are important to you, but then abandon them? It is likely unrecognized perfectionism that is holding you back from creating art, starting your new business, writing your book, or growing spiritually. You have big dreams that you keep secret, because you don't want to be embarrassed if you fail at them. Great news! This book is for you. I will help shake you free of your procrastination paralysis, calm your inner critic into silence, and open you to become what your soul desires. You will recognize and confront your fear of making mistakes and release the creativity-killing -- but deeply held -- belief that you can't go for your goals because of the risk of not doing it "just exactly right." How? Well, I've done it. Personality profile tests showed me very high on perfectionism, and I didn't even realize it. But then I "got it" -- I understood that this unhelpful internal drive to only do things I could do easily actually stunts my willingness to work on my biggest dreams. Outside of things like math tests, "Perfect" is mostly a myth. Yet it isn't even just that. You expect to make no mistakes -- or only just a few -- on your way to doing difficult tasks: learning the piano, writing a business plan, parenting, or creating the next hit Broadway play. Cindy Wigglesworth, author, says "Well written and entertaining, this book is full of helpful advice. I recognized myself in some of the stories - and I bet you will too! Don't waste time criticizing yourself. Use your time instead reading this book and trying the tips within it!" One such tip is looking at the "Critical Voice" as opposed to the "Creative Voice." And by "Critical" in this sense, I mean "analytical." A giant step we can take out of perfectionism is to distinguish between these two abilities, and when to use them. For example, all of us are music critics. We know what we like, we know what sounds good, we know what is boring. We don't always agree exactly on those, but we know the difference between a song by The Beatles, and something done in a garage by four guys who don't know what they're doing. But what about you? What about when YOU want to write a song? You have a lifetime of critical evaluation of music. But writing it? You are just starting out. And -- surprise! -- when you are just starting at something, you suck at it. Perfectionists, though, expect to be very good at things, very quickly. And so you quit writing songs, because your critical ability to know how good a song is, is FAR more developed than your ability to actually write a good song. See what I mean? "I have lived a creative life as a singer songwriter for over fifty years. Yet, locked away inside my perfectionist heart is a restrained longing to paint and to write books. I give thanks to John Connor for his insightful and illuminating book The Straightjacket of Perfectionism - he has provided me a key to free my creative soul. I recommend this book to stymied perfectionists everywhere." - Dana Cooper Singer-Songwriter Even people who know how to write a good song -- and Dana Cooper was written many good songs -- have areas in which their perfectionism trips them up. So get The Straitjacket of Perfectionism, and come with me to get free of the trap of 'perfect', and open up to progress -- taking steps and then really taking leaps -- toward your greatest goals.

One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

"In this penetrating analysis of the social attitudes toward various major illnesses - chiefly tuberculosis, the scourge of the 19th century, and cancer, the terror of our own - Susan Sontag demonstrates that "illness is not a metaphor" and shows why "the healthiest way of being ill is one purified of metaphoric thinking." Once tuberculosis was identified as a bacterial infection, it ceased to be a symbol of a romantic fading away or of a sensitive or artistic temperament, and it could be treated and cured. Similarly, we must today cease to think of cancer as a mark of doom, a punishment or a sign of a repressed personality, and recognize it for what it is: one disease among many and often receptive to treatment." -- from back cover.

Think you have no time for mindfulness? Think again. "Thoughtful and provocative.... The relevance of this work is unquestionable, as it leaves us inspired and optimistic that true healing really is possible" (Sharon Salzberg). For four decades, Jon Kabat-Zinn has been teaching the tangible benefits of meditation in the mainstream. Today millions of people have taken up a formal mindfulness meditation practice as part of their everyday lives. But how do you actually go about meditating? What does a formal meditation practice look like? And how can we overcome some of the common obstacles to incorporating meditation into daily life in an age of perpetual self-distraction? Falling Awake directly answers these urgent and timely questions. Originally published in 2005 as part of a larger book titled Coming to Our Senses, it has been updated with a new foreword by the author and is even more relevant today. Science shows that the tangible benefits of a mindfulness meditation practice are impossible to ignore. Kabat-Zinn explains how to incorporate them into our hectic, modern lives. Read on for a master class from one of the pioneers of the worldwide mindfulness movement.

One of the most engaging voices contemporary spirituality in is that of the Irish poet, Pádraig O'Tuama. This second poetry collection arises out of a decade of his hearing stories of people who have lived through personal and political conflict in Northern Ireland, the Middle East and other places of conflict. These poems tell stories of individuals who have lived through conflict: their loves and losses, their hope and generosity. One poem, 'Shaking hands' was written when Pádraig witnessed the historic handshake between Queen Elizabeth II and Martin McGuinness, who has since used the poem publicly. The phrase 'Sorry for your troubles' is used all over Ireland. It comes directly from an Irish phrase, yet Irish has no word for 'bereavement' - the word used is 'troiblóid'. So the phrase would be better translated 'Sorry for your bereavements'. With this in mind, this new book speaks evocatively about a time when thousands of people lost their lives and many thousands more lived through the searing pain of grief.

The Reynolds Pamphlet (1797) is an essay by Alexander Hamilton. Written while Hamilton was serving as Secretary of the Treasury, the Pamphlet was intended as a defense against accusations that Hamilton had conspired with James Reynolds to misuse funds meant to cover unpaid wages to Revolutionary War veterans. Admitting to an affair with Maria, Reynolds’ wife, Hamilton claims that the accusation is nothing more than an attempt at blackmail. This revelation not only endangered Hamilton’s career as a public figure, but constituted perhaps the earliest sex scandal in American history. “The bare perusal of the letters from Reynolds and his wife is sufficient to convince my greatest enemy that there is nothing worse in the affair than an irregular and indelicate amour. For this, I bow to the just censure which it merits. I have paid pretty severely for the folly and can never recollect it without disgust and self condemnation. It might seem affectation to say more.” Accused of corruption in his role as Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton was forced to confess his adultery, bringing shame to himself as a married man and supposedly honorable public figure, yet saving his political career in the process. Looking back on his affair with Maria Reynolds from a distance of five years, Hamilton expresses regret for his foolishness, yet wholeheartedly denies her husband’s accusation that he had been involved in his scheme to misuse government funds. Perhaps the first sex scandal in American history, the Reynolds affair sent shockwaves throughout the burgeoning republic, leaving many to question the motives and character of their leaders for the first time, though certainly not the last. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Alexander Hamilton’s Reynolds Pamphlet is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.
