Over the last decade, digital imaging has become ubiquitous. The advent of cheap digital cameras, and the inclusion of cameras in almost all mobile devices, has made photography one of the basic ways in which people record and communicate experiences. The ubiquity of cameras has imposed new constraints on their physical form. Camera modules are expected to be thin, light, and cheap. These restrictions make the production of high-quality images challenging. We turn to increasingly sophisticated algorithmic tools to transform the raw data captured by a camera into a photograph. This dissertation focuses on one such family of algorithmic tools: those expressible as a Gauss transform. One popular technique in this family is the bilateral filter, which smooths the fine detail in an image without crossing strong edges. It can be used to isolate and control the sharpness, tone, and contrast of a photograph at various scales. Its relatives, the joint-bilateral filter and the joint-bilateral upsample, allow for the fusion of data from multiple images. Another popular technique in the same family is non-local means, which denoises an image by replacing each pixel with the average color of all other pixels in the image with a similar local neighborhood. A naive implementation of these algorithms is prohibitively slow. This dissertation unifies these algorithms under a common framework, describes a variety of applications of the transform in photographic image processing, and presents two new data structures to accelerate the computation of such transforms: the permutohedral lattice, and the Gaussian kd-tree.

This book includes extended versions of the selected papers from VISIGRAPP 2009, the International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, during February 5–8, 2009 and organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). VISIGRAPP comprises three component conferences, namely, the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP), the International Conference on Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (GRAPP), and the International Conference on Imaging Theory and Applications (IMAGAPP). VISIGRAPP received a total of 422 paper submissions from more than 50 co- tries. From these, and after a rigorous double-blind evaluation method, 72 papers were published as full papers. These figures show that this conference is now an - tablished venue for researchers in the broad fields of computer vision, computer graphics and image analysis. From the full papers, 25 were selected for inclusion in this book. The selection process was based on the scores assigned by the Program Committee reviewers as well as the Session Chairs. Techniques for high dynamic range (HDR) imaging make it possible to capture and store an increased range of luminances and colors as compared to what can be achieved with a conventional camera. This high amount of image information can be used in a wide range of applications, such as HDR displays, image-based lighting, tone-mapping, computer vision, and post-processing operations. HDR imaging has been an important concept in research and development for many years. Within the last couple of years it has also reached the consumer market, e.g. with TV displays that are capable of reproducing an increased dynamic range and peak luminance. This thesis presents a set of technical contributions within the field of HDR imaging. First, the area of HDR video tone-mapping is thoroughly reviewed, evaluated and developed upon. A subjective comparison experiment of existing methods is performed, followed by the development of novel techniques that overcome many of the problems evidenced by the evaluation. Second, a largescale objective comparison is presented, which evaluates existing techniques that are involved in HDR video distribution. From the results, a first open-source HDR video codec solution, Luma HDRv, is built using the best performing techniques. Third, a machine learning method is proposed for the purpose of reconstructing an HDR image from one single-exposure low dynamic range (LDR) image. The method is trained on a large set of HDR images, using recent advances in deep learning, and the results increase the quality and performance significantly as compared to existing algorithms. The areas for which contributions are presented can be closely inter-linked in the HDR imaging pipeline. Here, the thesis work helps in promoting efficient and high-quality HDR video distribution and display, as well as robust HDR image reconstruction from a single conventional LDR image.

Image Quality Assessment is well-known for measuring the perceived image degradation of natural scene images but is still an emerging topic for computer-generated images. This book addresses this problem and presents recent advances based on soft computing. It is aimed at students, practitioners and researchers in the field of image processing and related areas such as computer graphics and visualization. In this book, we first clarify the differences between natural scene images and computer-generated images, and address the problem of Image Quality Assessment (IQA) by focusing on the visual perception of noise. Rather than using known perceptual models, we first investigate the use of soft computing approaches, classically used in Artificial Intelligence, as full-reference and reduced-reference metrics. Thus, by creating Learning Machines, such as SVMs and RVMs, we can assess the perceptual quality of a computer-generated image. We also investigate the use of interval-valued fuzzy sets as a no-reference metric. These approaches are treated both theoretically and practically, for the complete process of IQA. The learning step is performed using a database built from experiments with human users and the resulting models can be used for any image computed with a stochastic rendering algorithm. This can be useful for detecting the visual convergence of the different parts of an image during the rendering process, and thus to optimize the computation. These models can also be extended to other applications that handle complex models, in the fields of signal processing and image processing.
