Arrived last evening after a long trip. The roads past Hartford were so bad that the Slay and much of the baggage had to be abandoned. Has heard a report that at Spanktown, modern day Rahway, our people killed and wounded five hundred of the British during a foraging raid. Expresses his anguish over parting with her. Warns her that smallpox is spreading near her, and suggests you and your little image get inoculated. Warns her not to drink or stay too near fire afterward. Asks her to take care of some business affairs, saying this is making you quite a woman of business. Also mentions that he is now numbering his letters to her.

Says that she is planning to join him soon in Morristown, commenting that since Mrs. Washington is there she feels she can be there too. Mentions news of troop movements. Hears her brother is in York but hopes he will come home soon. Worries that the war will force Henry to draw his sword upon my own - and only brother. Hears that even Colonel Webb cannot raise men using a bounty. Notes that Mr. Jarvis desires cash. In postscript says she is forwarding a letter to him from the famous Dutchess of Brotenburg, Princess of Frankfurt, and cousin of the queen of Great Britain. Brotenburg probably refers to Brandenburg. Worries that Peter will be forced to do the duty of common soldiers, and upset that William is leaving soon.

Expects General William Howe to combine forces with Burgoyne at an unspecified point along the North River (the Hudson). Mentions that Mrs. Greene (Catherine Littlefield Greene, wife of General Nathanael Greene) arrived several days before. Discusses a letter he sent to John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, inquiring if Congress intended to appoint Phillippe du Coudray in command of the Continental Artillery. Despite the conditions, reports, Our troops are in prodigious spirits at being able to drive nearly the whole collective force of the enemy so far- Relates that his brother, William Knox, behaved with Spirit. Also notes that General [Francis] Nash was injured by a cannon (Nash died from this wound). Forwarded from Hartford, Connecticut 18 October 1777 by Jonathan Trumbull and signed by Trumbull.
