Knox discusses with Lincoln matters concerning their business affairs. He tells Lincoln that Henry Jackson is having a difficult time advancing anything, and he asks Lincoln that he not bring any action against Jackson, as it will have a most pernicious [effect]. Knox says he will try to get Lincoln the money by mid-summer. Knox goes on to talk about other related matters and offers ideas about how to best deal with associates who are requesting money or who are not paying up.

Writes that he is fully impressed with how busy Lincoln is (Lincoln was preparing to lead a regiment to face off against the Shays insurgents), but hopes that he would not mind giving him news of the battles in Massachusetts when possible. Writes, I do not request to know any thing which if divulged by miscarriage of letters would be in the least injurious - Any communications which shall be made shall be retained with me unless you should please to order otherwise. Knox gives advice to General Lincoln, Southern Department Commander: My ignorance of the Country makes me an inadequate judge of your situation, but the numbers you mention you have to oppose the Enemy is most certainly a very serious matter. This it is to hoped will ultimately be remedied but the mean time will probably be very disagreeable. Advises Lincoln to exercise patience. Relates that the right wing of the Continental Army is in New Jersey, while the left wing and part of the second line are east of the Hudson River. Remarks, The Enemy by shipping off so great a quantity of troops have not enough left to disturb our repose much this winter. We are enjoying ease at your expense. I feel a kind of shame in participating of any entertainment at a time when any part of my friends are in a disagreeable situation.

Notes the President (George Washington) is the person who will decide when and who the appointment goes too. Knox had planned to travel to New England by way of Albany, New York, so he could see Lincoln and Benedict Arnold, but his late departure will prevent him from taking that route. Comments on Lincoln's recovery (his leg was badly injured during the Saratoga campaign in 1777). Congratulates Lincoln on the victory at Saratoga, New York: The success with which your exertions have been crowned, and the ample security it affords at present to this and the neighboring states must be a pleasing reflection in your pain and confinement. Relates that George Washington has ordered him (Knox) to transfer cannons from Albany, New York to Pennsylvania. Remarks that George Clinton, Governor of New York, suggested to Knox that the cannons be transported by water after the ice melts. Notes that if Lincoln is not well enough to travel to Boston in six weeks, Knox will travel through Albany to see him.
