A book of five self-contained, (yet connected) stories featuring an adventurous group of mostly young hedgehogs and other woodland animals who live together in High Brooms woods near Hedgebridge Wells. Led by a core group of hedgehogs, these anthropomorphic creatures combine talents to put on a "Gala Ballet Night". In the "Voyage of the Jersey Royal" they build and sail a boat to a mysterious island in a pond, where, after a number of scary adventures, they rescue two marooned dormice. With the arrival of the hedgehogs' French cousin Hervé, three of the young hedgehogs later decide to visit France. In the story "Shaky Prickle Night", the hedgehog gang share forgotten children's customs which used to be practised through Hallowe'en and Mischief Night. The final story, "A Summer in France", puts the three young hedgehogs in contact with their own little counterpart society in a woodland in Northern France. They quickly adapt to the new environment and help to bring about a Grand Village Sports Day, inventing a completely new and exciting event - the Medley Relay (le Relais Mixte) which allows all the woodland communities to compete together for the first time. The stories were originally shared with grandchildren and a grandfather's voice can still be heard throughout the book. A book to treasure - filled with lavishly illustrated, exciting stories of woodland adventures in England and France, where you can't help but warm to these animal characters and all their achievements.

Weapons of myth and scandal, that is the best way to describe the spigot weapons deployed by the British in the Second World War. Unlike conventional mortars, a spigot mortar does not have a barrel through with the round is fired. Instead, the general concept involves a steel rod – the ‘spigot’ – onto which the bomb is placed before it is fired. This design was, as David Lister reveals, the basis of a number of successful weapons used during the Second World War. The myth of the PIAT man-portable anti-tank weapon is, for example, tied closely to British paratroopers struggling in the ruins of Arnhem with an inadequate design, one inferior to the German equivalent. Similarly, the myth of the Blacker Bombard is of a useless weapon, one of dubious quality, that was dumped on the unsuspecting Home Guard. In reality, neither scenario is the case. In the last 15 years, the social cognitive perspective has been applied to the study of intergroup relations. Theoretical advances have been made regarding such issues as the representation of information about ingroup and outgroup members, the structural properties of stereotypes, the relation between cognitive representation and judgment, and the ways in which cognition, effect, and motivation interactively influence the perception, judgment, and memory of ingroup and outgroup members. The first volume in this new series, this book seeks to bring the above two traditions together. Focusing on the interplay between cognition and behavior in intergroup settings, it addresses four general questions: * How does intergroup cognition (perceptions, judgments, and memories) influence intergroup behavior (ingroup favoritism and discrimination)? * How does intergroup behavior subsequently change intergroup cognition? * What is the mediational role of effect, motivational processes, and social context? * How effective can change in intergroup cognition be in altering intergroup behavior? This volume focuses not on a specific theory but rather on an approach. This approach is the interface between intergroup cognition and intergroup behavior. The various contributors are leading investigators in these areas and share the belief that the field has reached a level of maturity where it can start asking the hard questions regarding the complex and multifaceted ways in which intergroup cognition and behavior are related. The investigators do not just summarize their work.
