An analysis based on forced-convection heat-transfer theory, similar to the analysis presented for air-cooled engines in NACA Report No. 612, is made of the cooling processes in liquid-cooled engine cylinders. Semi-empirical equations that relate the average head and barrel temperatures with the primary engine and coolant parameters are derived.

A study has been made of the heat-transfer processes in liquid-cooled engines and an equation has been developed that relates the heat rejection to the coolant and the engine operating conditions. Tests of an Allison V-3420-11 engine have been made to check the accuracy of the equation and to establish the cooling characteristics of the engine. By determining the few constants of the equation, the heat rejection to the coolant may be predicted with good accuracy for any particular engine operating condition. The tests showed that the rate of heat dissipation to the coolant was only slightly affected by either the rate of coolant flow or the relative proportions of ethylene glycol and water composing the coolant mixture.

As a supplement to an investigation of the cooling characteristics of a multi-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, tests were conducted with two liquid-cooled cylinders in order to isolate the effects of the various engine and coolant variables on cylinder temperatures and to obtain engine-cooling data required for a fundamental study of the heat-transfer processes in liquid-cooled engines.

Heat Transfer topics are commonly of a very complex nature. Often different mechanisms like heat conduction, convection, thermal radiation, and non-linear phenomena, such as temperature-dependent thermophysical properties, and phase changes occur simultaneously. New developments in numerical solution methods of partial differential equations and access to high-speed, efficient and cheap computers have led to dramatic advances during recent years. This book publishes papers from the Ninth International Conference on Advanced Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements in Heat and Mass Transfer, exploring new approaches to the numerical solutions of heat and mass transfer problems and their experimental measurement. Papers encompass a number of topics such as: Diffusion and Convection; Conduction; Natural and Forced Convection; Heat and Mass Transfer Interaction; Casting, Welding, Forging and other Processes; Heat Exchanges; Atmospheric Studies; Advances in Computational Methods; Modelling and Experiments; Micro and Nano Scale Heat and Mass Transfer; Energy Systems; Energy Balance Studies; Thermal Material Characterization; Applications in Biology; Applications in Ecological Buildings; Case Studies.

The editors explain that the classical formulae and techniques for predicting heat flow do not apply to the unique conditions found in reciprocating engines. They warn the reader--presumed to be aspiring designers of more efficient and less polluting engines--that although these papers, from every country where engineering is practiced, contain nearly all the available knowledge on the subject, no definitive answers emerge, no breakthroughs loom around the next equation. The topics include the transfer of engine heat and of external heat, numerical flow simulation, applications and devices, ignition and quenching, and measurement techniques.
