Download Poet in Killing Zone Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Semi epic, one of the best pieces ever written by Gurkha Poets: An epic with a single theme that narrates the sense of excitement before enlisting in the army, then moving ahead to the war front, leaving behind hearth and home in a distant land, being wounded or maimed or killed, then drawing a history of this, then the sense of futility and anger, and then the sense of consolation, solace, and resignation. From simple, humble sensation to a state of spiritual bliss. Critics have compared this poet to the Great War poets such as Isaac Rosenberg, Robert Graves, Rupert Brook, Herbert Read, Siegfried Sassoon, Alan Seeger and their poetry.

Download Gurkha Warriors - The Inside Story of The World's Toughest Regiment Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Throughout our recent and not-so-recent history, the understated, fearless and hearty Gurkhas have served the British loyally and without complaint. For more than a hundred years, this bloodthirsty regiment has followed the British Army around the globe - from Gallipoli to the jungles of Burma in World War II, from Palestine to the Falklands and the Gulf War. This text tells the story of this regiment. It tells of the Gurkha blood running through the veins of British military conquests for more than two centuries, from the founding of the brigade by the terrifying, extraordinary Johnny Gurkha through to the amazing feats that put Gurkhas in the same distinguished company as the British Paras, the Commandos, the Guards and the Black Watch.

Download Martial races Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book explores how and why Scottish Highlanders, Punjabi Sikhs, and Nepalese Gurkhas became identified as the British Empire’s fiercest, most manly soldiers in nineteenth century discourse. As ‘martial races’ these men were believed to possess a biological or cultural disposition to the racial and masculine qualities necessary for the arts of war. Because of this, they were used as icons to promote recruitment in British and Indian armies - a phenomenon with important social and political effects in India, in Britain, and in the armies of the Empire. Martial Races bridges regional studies of South Asia and Britain while straddling the fields of racial theory, masculinity, imperialism, identity politics, and military studies. Of particular importance is the way it exposes the historical instability of racial categories based on colour and its insistence that historically specific ideologies of masculinity helped form the logic of imperial defence, thus wedding gender theory with military studies in unique ways. Moreover, Martial Races challenges the marginalisation of the British Army in histories of Victorian popular culture, and demonstrates the army’s enduring impact on the regional cultures of the Highlands, the Punjab and Nepal. This unique study will make fascinating reading for higher level students and experts in imperial history, military history and gender history.

Download From Frontier Policy to Foreign Policy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, Qing rulers, officials, and scholars fused diverse, fragmented perceptions of foreign territory into one integrated worldview. In the same period, a single "foreign" policy emerged as an alternative to the many localized "frontier" policies hitherto pursued on the coast, in Xinjiang, and in Tibet. By unraveling Chinese, Manchu, and British sources to reveal the information networks used by the Qing empire to gather intelligence about its emerging rival, British India, this book explores China's altered understanding of its place in a global context. Far from being hobbled by a Sinocentric worldview, Qing China's officials and scholars paid close attention to foreign affairs. To meet the growing British threat, they adapted institutional practices and geopolitical assumptions to coordinate a response across their maritime and inland borderlands. In time, the new and more active response to Western imperialism built on this foundation reshaped not only China's diplomacy but also the internal relationship between Beijing and its frontiers.
