The Great Lakes—containing one-fifth of the standing freshwater on earth, covering some 94,250 square miles with a combined 10,210 miles of shoreline—have suffered greatly from human use and abuse since the advent of the commercial fur trade in the late 1600s. Logging destroys or degrades habitats, urbanization and industrialization pour human and industrial wastes into the water, fertilizers flowing off farm fields feed algae that suffocate other creatures, and ships bring in exotic species that decimate the lakes’ biodiversity. In 1985 when the International Joint Commission identified more than forty pollution hotspots around the lakes, few people had faith the Areas of Concern would be cleaned up in their lifetime. Indeed, aquatic ecosystem restoration is extremely difficult: only nine of these hotspots have been removed from the infamous list. But progress is being made, and at the helm are local champions, people with a profound love of the region who lead by example and build broad, diverse coalitions in order to realize a common vision. The stories of fourteen of these champions are told here to inspire necessary action to care for the place they call home, so it may be a home to many living creatures for ages yet to come.

The McGuffins share with readers the magnificent beauty of the Great Lakes Heritage Coast The Great Lakes Heritage Coast is an area that includes 1.1 million hectares of coastline along the north shore of Lake Superior and into Georgian Bay that has been recognized by the Ontario Government as a natural resource to be preserved and protected. As champions of Canada's wilderness, the McGuffins vowed to support this project and bring attention to the Heritage Coast by paddling the route and reporting on their adventure. For three months in the summer of 2002, Gary, Joanie, their three-year-old daughter, Sila, and their Alaskan Malamute, Kalija, paddled the route. The 3,000-km trip from Thunder Bay to Port Severn took them into some of the most breathtaking wilderness Canada has to offer. Through their written narrative and more than a hundred vibrant full-colour photographs, the McGuffins share with readers the things that make this trip unforgettable: the awe-inspiring star-filled skies, the rich variety of flora and fauna, the warmth of campfires on cool nights, the morning sun reflecting off pristine lakes, and the majestic ancient trees that abound in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest. This book is a tribute to that beauty.

In the 150 years of college football history, the national championship has been decided by unanimous vote only 33 times. This book analyzes the various methods of selecting these champions and what made the teams special. Drawing on archives and early published works, a firsthand description of the 1869 inaugural game between Princeton and Rutgers is provided, along with details of how these earliest teams were managed. The contributions and innovations of Walter Camp, the "Father of Football," are explored, as is the evolution of the game itself. Each unanimous season since the turn of the 20th century--from Yale in 1900 to LSU in 2019--is covered in detail, with a brief history of each school's football program. The question "is there a best ever team" is explored.
