If people in the early church had driven cars, "God shows no partiality" would have been on their bumper stickers. It was a well-known principle that led the church to include Gentiles, eunuchs, foreigners, women, and children within its community life. This slogan shows up in multiple books of the New Testament, yet it remains unfamiliar to most Christians today. Our failure to remember this slogan that once made the church so dynamic has warped Christian theology. What would happen if we reclaimed it as a slogan with which to address racism, homophobia, and religious exclusivism? This book makes the case for a different understanding of what "Lordship" means when talking about an impartial God. By looking at the conflicts of the past, it points the way to a hopeful future.

Download Salvation and Sovereignty Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In Salvation and Sovereignty, Kenneth Keathley asks, “What shall a Christian do who is convinced of certain central tenets of Calvinism but not its corollaries?” He then writes, “I see salvation as a sovereign work of grace but suspect that the usual Calvinist understanding of sovereignty (that God is the cause of all things) is not sustained by the biblical witness as a whole.” Aiming to resolve this matter, the author argues that just three of Calvinism’s five TULIP points can be defended scripturally and instead builds on the ROSES acronym first presented by Timothy George (Radical depravity, Overcoming grace, Sovereign election, Eternal life, Singular redemption). In relation, Keathley looks at salvation and sovereignty through the lens of Molinism, a doctrine named after Luis Molina (1535-1600) that is based on a strong notion of God’s control and an equally firm affirmation of human freedom.

Download The Big Wide Welcome: A True Story about Jesus, James, and a Church That Learned to Love All Sorts of People Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Bible storybook that inspires young children to be like Jesus and love others. This beautiful hardback Bible storybook for 3-6-year-olds uses the Bible's teaching on favoritism from James chapter 2 to encourage children to love and welcome people regardless of their wealth, personality or background, just like Jesus does. Jesus knows that everyone needs him to rescue them from their sin, and he welcomes anyone who is sorry and asks to be his friend. In this book, children will learn that Christians and churches are called to be like Jesus: to give a big, wide welcome to all kinds of people so that they can hear the good news for themselves.

Download The Transforming Power of Grace Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
How does an infinite God relate to finite human beings? How does the death of Jesus Christ bring about human salvation? How are Christians able to actively address the world's ills while maintaining their citizenship in the kingdom of God? These are questions the church grapples with today, as it always has. Yet, according to Thomas C. Oden, contemporary theology has neglected the church's traditional answer to these questions: the doctrine of grace. All too often modern theologians either ignore the doctrine of grace or relate it to the achievement of a particular political agenda. Oden asserts that only by reclaiming the centrality of grace--defined as God's self-giving through Jesus Christ in personal encounter with the individual human will--can Christian theology be true to the gospel. In order to reclaim the doctrine of grace, the author reaches back, beyond the fragmentation of theology that took place during and after the Enlightenment. He draws upon the ecumenical consensus held by early Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant theologians, councils, and creeds regarding this cardinal Christian doctrine. By adducing this ancient unity, Oden challenges modern assumptions concerning the sources and methods of the theological enterprise and calls contemporary Christians to discern what their forebears in the faith knew to be essential to the gospel: that to be a Christian is to be formed, nurtured, and upheld solely by divine grace.
