Excerpt from Geological Survey of Hokkaido: Report of Progress of the Yesso Geological Surveys for 1875, and Seven Coal Survey Reports Although Shiogama is but four or five ri distant from Sendai, which our boatmen thought to be a town of inhabitants, we found it impossible to hire two jinrikishas there were in the village to take two of us there in the evening and back in the early morning, owing it was said to a previous engagement, One of our boat men had assured us that the trip could be easily made, and that two rio would be ample compensation to the four coo lies that would pull us, Some doubts however were raised as to the possibility of my going so far outside of treaty limits without molestation from officials. At Shiogama nevertheless the inhabitants seemed to somewhat accus tomed to the presence of foreigners, and one landlady of an hotel or teahouse even came to me in the street and by mistake accosted me as an old acquaintance and invited us to patronise her house. A public notice close by, forbid ding entrance into the adjoining Shinto temple grounds on horseback or in a carriage, was written in English and French as well as Japanese.
