The results of this study indicate that various parameters can be constructed for accurately predicting the relationship between paleoenvironment and the occurrence of potentially toxic, highly acid, stratigraphic zones resulting from the oxidation of iron sulfides. It also points out the interrelationship and interdependence of both coal and sediment phases for accurately determining the geochemical characteristics of a particular coal-bearing stratigraphic sequence, and for establishing reliable trends. Furthermore, it demonstrates the need for thorough geochemical analysis of coal and associated sediments for proper pre-mine planning and subsequent successful reclamation.
