John Shank was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1761 and removed with relatives to Shenandoah County, Virginia when a small boy. He is believed to be a great grandson of Johannes Schenck who was an adult in 1709 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and possibly emigrated from Switzerland or Czechoslovakia. John enlisted 15 Nov 1779 and served until honorably discharged 16 Sep 1781, in Captain Abraham Keller's Co., commanded by Col. Montgomery of the Virginia Militia. This was a part of the command of General George Rogers Clark, the "hero of Kaskaskia and Vincennes." John's military service consisted mainly of helping build Ft. Jefferson, six miles south of the mouth of the Ohio River in Kentucky and defending it against Indians. After return home, he shortly removed to Rockingham County, Virginia where he resided until 1793 when he removed to Wilkes County, Georgia, where he resided until his death in 1835.
