Excerpt from Gardening in California, Landscape and Flower These inquiries have become so numerous that it has been practically impossible for him to answer them all, and such replies as he has been able to give have necessarily been very brief. He therefore believes that his experience, as now embodied in this book, will be of interest and perhaps value to those who take delight in the wonderful results with which the fertile soil and genial climate of our State reward their earnest and loving labor. It is believed that the practical value of the work is added to by the illustrations which are all from photographs especially taken for this purpose. Excerpt from Gardening in California, Landscape and Flower This handbook is respectfully submitted to gardeners in California, amateur and professional, as supplementary to, and a modification of those excellent treatises and encyclopedias on Landscape and Flower Gardening which have become the authorities and text-books on the subject, but which were written for the conditions of climate and season in European countries and the Eastern States of our own land. In California these conditions are so different, and the possibilities of the culture and development of trees, shrubs and flowers are so much greater than in Europe or any other of the United States of America, that our gardeners have had to do a great deal of original investigation and experimental work. The results of such investigation and work by the writer are recorded in these pages. The difference referred to is well illustrated by the universally loved Pansy which, in the Eastern States, is sown in February, flowering in May or June, while in California it is sown in July and flowers from November to May, and also by the Acacia which, in the East, is grown in pot in the conservatory, protected by glass and heated by artificial heat, whereas, in our State, it grows, a handsome tree, in any soil in the open air and flowers in midwinter. Although it has been found necessary to treat of the conservatory to a certain extent, yet this has been done only as subsidiary to the main purpose of the book, the treatment, in the conservatory, of plants which are not hardy in the open air locally, being the same here as in any other part of the country. It should, however, be kept in view that hundreds of trees, shrubs and flowers, which cannot possibly exist, in the open air, in those parts of the United States and Europe where the climatic conditions are more harsh than here, flourish and give grand effects out of doors in California. Excerpt from With the Flowers, and Trees in California In doing this, the author has tried to revive as vividly as may be, the memory of his own delight and inquisitiveness when, twelve years ago, his eyes first beheld the gardens wild and cultivated of the State which, of all our Commonwealths, is to Flora the most hospitable and by her the most favored; and to set down the answer as well as he can to many questions which naturally arose in his mind then and which are on the lips of many tourists and residents alike, today. Excerpt from California Garden-Flowers, Shrubs, Trees and Vines: Being Mainly Suggestions for Working Amateurs Thus the writer avoids the perilous heights of science whence the botanists continually bring unique and beautiful plants for common use and dispense accurate knowledge of all plants which is of great value. Thus also he avoids the miry lowlands, where the florist works with acres of glass, tons of heating iron, and pyramids of fertilizers to create monsters, which save amateurs from too great conceit in their own achievements. Between the two lie the mesas of moderate effort and moderate investment upon which anyone, with a love for it can grow in California, through the whole circle of the year, by the square foot or by the acre, as his available space may be, flowers to delight his heart, to comfort his wife and to educate his children. Great as is California in her endowment of nature's handiwork in flowers, great as is the opportunity she offers for striking achievements in the higher arts of flower-growing, unquestionably her greatest gift to her people is active participation with them in the common growing of flowers for the environment of such homes as most people can secure. It is to the promotion of this great benefit and joy that the writer aims to minister. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
