This is a book about Mathematics but not a book of Mathematics. It is an attempt, between the serious and facetious, of conveying the idea that a mathematical thought is the result of different experiences, geographical and social factors. Even though it is not clear when Mathematics had started, it is evident that it had been used at an early stage of human history and by ancient Babylonians and Egyptians who have already developed a sophisticated corpus of mathematical items, which were the workhorse tools in engineering, navigation, trades and astronomy. The book sweeps across the mathematical minds of the Greek and Arab traditions, concepts by Assyro-Babylonians, and ancient Indian Vedic culture. The mathematical mind has modeled the evolution of societies and has been modeled by it. It is now in the midst of a great revolution and it is not clear where it will bring us. The current new epoch needs new mathematical tools and, above this, a new way of looking at Mathematics. This book tells the tale of what went on and what might go on.

This Book Taps The Mathematical Traditions Of India For Some Simple And Elegant Methods Of Performing Arithmetic Calculations. There Are Techniques For Multiplication, Division, Squaring, Square-Rooting And Factorisation That, Once Mastered, Are Faster Than The Conventional Approaches Currently In Wide Use. Errors Arising Out Of Carelessness In Calculation Were Apparently A Problem Faced By Our Ancestors Too! They Devised An Amazingly Simple Technique To Catch Such Errors. These Techniques Are Presented In This Book In A Lucid Manner, With A Large Number Of Examples To Illustrate The Basic Ideas And Elaborate On Their Variations. The Use Of Sanskrit Terms Has Been Minimised. Most Of The Methods Described Are General And Work For All Numbers, Not Just For Special Cases. The Mixed-Number, Or Mishrank, Which Contains Both Positive And Negative Digits, Is Extremely Useful In Simplifying Calculations And Is Widely Used In This Book. The Reader Will Find That Ideas Such As These Can Be Effectively Grafted To The Conventional Methods. The Book Will Interest A Wide Audience. Students Will Benefit The Most, Since They Can Easily Make The Methods Of This Book Their Own. They Will Soon Find That Much Of Their Arithmetic Can Be Performed Orally. Adults Will Find It A Pleasure To Discover New And Elegant Ways Of Doing Things They Already Know. The Computer Enthusiast May Find Hidden In The Simple Methods Ideas To Speed-Up Machine Computation. Finally, The Mathematically-Inclined May Find Their Curiosity Sufficiently Aroused To Go Beyond This Book And Delve Deeper Into The Indian Mathematical Legacy.

This epoch-making and monumental work on Vedic Mathematics unfolds a new method of approach. It relates to the truth of numbers and magnitudes equally applicable to all sciences and arts. The book brings to light how great and true knowledge is born of intuition, quite different from modern Western method. The ancient Indian method and its secret techniques are examined and shown to be capable of solving various problems of mathematics. The universe we live in has a basic mathematical structure obeying the rules of mathematical measures and relations. All the subjects in mathematics-Multiplication, Division, Factorization, Equations, Calculus, Analytical Conics, etc.-are dealt with in forty chapters, vividly working out all problems, in the easiest ever method discovered so far. The volume, more a 'magic', is the result of intuitional visualization of fundamental mathematical truths born after eight years of highly concentrated endeavour of Jagadguru Sri Bharati Krsna Tirtha.

The ?Vedas? are considered ?divine? in origin and are assumed to be revelations from God. In traditional Hinduism, the Vedas were to be learnt only by the ?upper? caste Hindus. The ?lower castes? (Sudras) and so-called ?untouchables? (who were outside the Hindu social order) were forbidden from even hearing to its recitation. In recent years, there have been claims that the Vedas contain the cure to AIDS and the production of electricity. Here the authors probe into Vedic Mathematics (that gained renown during the revivalist Hindutva rule in India and was introduced into school syllabus in several states); and explore if it is really ?Vedic? in origin or ?Mathematics? in content. To gain a better understanding of its imposition, we interviewed students, teachers, parents, educationists and activists. We analyze this problem using models like Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM), Fuzzy Relational Maps (FRM) and newly constructed Fuzzy Dynamical System (and their Neutrosophic Analogues). The issue of imposition of Vedic Mathematics into the school curriculum involves religious politics, caste supremacy, apart from elementary arithmetic ? so we use fuzzy and neutrosophic techniques to gain acute insight into how students have been affected because of this politically motivated syllabus revision.

VEDIC MATHEMATICS For Students, Level – 1 of 5 Series is the first book on Vedic Mathematics introducing the ancient techniques and fundamental concepts present in Mathematics. This book has detailed illustrations of all the methods explained in detail. This book helps students increase their ability and get into their comfort zone when solving problems. Vedic Mathematics can aspire young minds to be creative and improve lateral thinking. In ancient India, Mathematics was known by the general name Ganitha, which includes arithmetic, geometry, algebra, astronomy and astrology. In the field of Mathematics, ancient Indians made three distinct contributions – the notation system, the decimal system and the use of zero. The system discovered by Swami Bharathi Krishna Tirthaji is based on sixteen formulae (or sutras) and thirteen sub-formulae (upa-sutras). These sutras can be related to natural and mental functions such as completing a whole, noticing analogies, generalisation and so on. It provides one line, mental and super-fast methods along with quick cross-checking systems. It offers concepts, methods, tricks and shortcuts to workout complex mathematical problems fast, literally in few seconds without using calculators and computers. SALIENT FEATURES OF VEDIC MATHEMATICS: ü Removes fear of Mathematics ü Enables strong Logical thinking & Problem-Solving skills ü Enables Faster Calculations ü Improves Concentration ü Encourages Mental Calculations ü Encourages Multidimensional Thinking ü Develops Creativity

The author has attempted to codify several useful results embedded in the ancient lore, in a form which is easily accessible to the children learning mathematics. Many of the chapters deal with computations using simple techniques which will shorten the effort involved in the conventional approach. The price one pays, of course, is that one has to learn the tricks, memorize them and use the appropriate one for each problem. While one might think that this takes away the generality of the modern approach, it certainly has the element of charm and intrigue which children [and grown-ups!] will find entertaining. Even working out why many of these approaches lead to correct results is a valuable exercise by itself. Contents Foreword, Preface, Feedback, Introduction, 1. Complement, Subtraction, Multiplication by Specific Numbers, Base Multiplication, Working Base Multiplication, Multiplication, Algebra, Digital Roots, Divisibility, Division I, Division II, Squares, Straight Squaring, Cubes, Square roots of exact squares, Cube roots of exact cubes, Straight Division, Square roots II, Sutras, Glossary, Index.
