"Four-Day Planet" is set on a planet called Fenris, where extremes in climate have resulted in an extremely small population with very few off-world contacts. The protagonist is a 17-year-old reporter who fights to overturn the corrupt 'government' and coercive mercantilist monopoly on 'tallow-wax', the sole export from Fenris. "Lone Star Planet" is set on New Texas, where everything from cows to nuts is prefixed. Silk, the unwilling, banished replacement for the Solar League's former ambassador, must solve the murder and stave off an anticipated invasion by the Srauff, a canine alien race, while preventing his own assassination on a planet where the killing of politicians is acceptable, if they "had it coming."

Fenris isn't a hell planet, but it's nobody's bargain. With 2,000-hour days and an 8,000-hour year, it alternates blazing heat with killing cold. A planet like that tends to breed a special kind of person: tough enough to stay alive and smart enough to make the best of it. When that kind of person discovers he's being cheated of wealth he's risked his life for, that kind of planet is ripe for revolution. Henry Beam Piper (March 23, 1904 - c. November 6, 1964) was an American science fiction author. He wrote many short stories and several novels. He is best known for his extensive Terro-Human Future History series of stories and a shorter series of "Paratime" alternate history tales. He wrote under the name H. Beam Piper. Another source gives his name as "Horace Beam Piper" and a different date of death. His gravestone says "Henry Beam Piper." Piper himself may have been the source of part of the confusion; he told people the H stood for Horace, encouraging the assumption that he used the initial because he disliked his name. Four-Day Planet is a science-fiction novel by H. Beam Piper, first published in 1961. It is the story of Fenriss, a planet with a 2000 hour rotation rate. That is, any given spot on the planet is in darkness for 1000 hours, and sunlit for another 1000. Against this background is the story of a pioneer colony, inhabiting the Four Day Planet so they can hunt 'sea monsters' to obtain the long chain hydrocarbon molecules in their blubber. The protagonist is a 17 year old boy reporter who is investigating the corrupt government of the planet. The book has 20 chapters: The Ship From Terra; Reporter Working; Bottom Level; Main City Level; Meeting Out Of Order; Elementary, My Dear Kivelson; Aboard The Javelin; Practice, 50-Mm Gun; Monster Killing; Mayday, Mayday; Darkness And Cold; Castaways Working; The Beacon Light; The Rescue; Vigilantes; Civil War Postponed; Tallow-Wax Fire; The Treason Of Bish Ware; Masks Off; and, Finale.

Reminiscent of old whaling stories, Four-Day Planet follows the story of Walter Boyd, a scrappy 17-year-old reporter working for his father at the Port Sandor Times. Walt gets tied up in the adventures of the sea-monster hunters on Fenris—a barely-habitable planet with a 2,000-hour day. The prized—and only—commodity on Fenris is tallow-wax, a miraculous material harvested from the dangerous seas of the planet. While being set in a grand sci-fi universe, the book packs in more about intrigue, betrayal, and the grit required to survive on a backwater planet of the Federation. The book was later re-published as a “two-for-one” with Lone Star Planet (originally titled A Planet for Texans). This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Four-Day Planet...where the killing heat of a thousand-hour day drives men underground, and the glorious hundred-hour sunset is followed by a thousand-hour night so cold that only an Extreme Environment Suit can preserve the life of anyone caught outside. This prescient tale will please fans of politically oriented science fiction. Henry Beam Piper was an American science fiction author. He wrote many short stories and several novels under the name H. Beam Piper, and is best known for his extensive Terro-Human Future History series of stories and a shorter series of Paratime alternate history tales. Piper's work falls into two camps: stark space operas, such as Space Viking, or stories of cultural conflict and misunderstanding, such as Little Fuzzy and the Paratime stories. Piper's characterization was rooted in the notion of the self-reliant man: an individual able to take care of himself and both willing and able to tackle any situation which might arise. This is perfectly exemplified in a bit of dialogue found in his short story Oomphel in the Sky" "He actually knows what has to be done and how to do it, and he's going right ahead and doing it, without holding a dozen conferences and round-table discussions and giving everybody a fair and equal chance to foul things up for him."
