Formula One: Made in Britain is one of Formula One's last untold stories. As a centre of technical excellence for over thirty years. Britain is at the sharp end of the worldwide motor sport industry, and playing ever harder to win. Most of the sport's Grand Prix teams are based in the UK and many of them have British managers and designers who act as a showcase for the UK's skill base - past, present and future. The success of Britain's Formula One industry has gone largley unrecognised outside the close-knit world of the racing aficionado. Now, with Formula One: Made in Britain, Clive Couldwell reveals what makes this industry tick and why many of the world's players choose to come here. He explores Motorsport Valley, an area which covers the south and Midlands of the UK, where 75 per cent of the world's single-seater racing cars are designed and built, and talks to many of F1's leading lights. Winning in F1 depends on innovation and performance-critical engineering, and in this fascinating and insightful book, Clive Couldwell show how UK research and development are leading the world.

This book is the second in a multi-volume, decade-by-decade series covering the entire history of Formula 1 through its teams and cars. This instalment examines the 1970s, when the sport gained big new sponsors and grew into a television spectacle, with battles between Ferrari and Cosworth-powered opposition a continuing theme. As well as the big championship-winning teams--Lotus, Ferrari, McLaren and Tyrrell--this was a period when small teams and privateers continued to be involved in significant numbers and they are all included, down to the most obscure and unsuccessful. This book shines new light on many areas of the sport and will be treasured by all Formula 1 enthusiasts.

The word prosetry does not exist. But the author of this book of prosetry uses it to describe the presentation of prose in a manner that attempts to depict the aims and objectives of poetry. The Rain Drop and Other Shades of Prosetry is written in five sections. The first is The Rain Drop and tells of an author who has just achieved great success. He reflects back on an embarrassing incident that happened when he was six, and which comes to mind whenever it rains. The second story, The Priest, is about a man who became a priest by accident, but grows to love his chosen profession. Then he is presented a great temptation when he meets a woman who resembles a girl he loved as a teenager. The Cricketer shows the game through the eyes of an experienced player, one about to go through a very unusual experience during a cricket match. In The Driver, the anxieties of an aging Formula One racecar driver show what happens during what could be the last year of his racing career. In the fifth and final story, The Admirer, the anguish of a young man who has fallen madly in love with a girl he has never spoken with is told in prosetry.

In the forty-year period between 1951 and 1991, Canadian sports car competition underwent a massive change, transforming itself from an amateur recreational pastime to a commercialized profession and from an individual sport to a spectacle for mass consumption. The Chequered Past is the story of the struggle over power and purpose within the Canadian auto sport that led to this transformation. The first comprehensive history of sports car racing and rallying in Canada, The Chequered Past traces the efforts of the national governing body - the Canadian Auto Sport Clubs (CASC) - to bring its sports car competition up to a 'world class' level, and to manage the consequences of those efforts in the second half of the twentieth century. David Charters traces the social origins of the sport and the major trends that shaped it: professionalism, technological change, rising costs, and the influence of commercial sponsors. Charters argues that while early enthusiasts set the sport on a course toward professionalism that would eventually produce world-class Canadian events and racers, that course would also ultimately change the purpose of the sport: from personal recreation to mass entertainment. As technological innovations drove up the costs of competing at the top ranks, racers were forced to rely on sponsors, who commercialized and ultimately gained control of the sport. The end result, Charters argues, was the marginalization of the amateur competitor and of the CASC itself. Based on extensive research into the CASC's records and dozens of interviews with former competitors and officials, The Chequered Past opens a window into the rich but virtually unknown history of the auto sport, and claims for it a place in Canadian sports history.
