Public and political concern about the increasing prevalence of diabetes has prompted major concern about treatment of patients with the condition. Foot complications are some of the commonest causes of hospitalisation of people with diabetes and if not treated well often lead to amputation. There is evidence that 85% of these amputations can be prevented by better understanding of the problem and by multi-disciplinary teams working more effectively together. This has been recognised and NICE have recently published guidelines on diabetic foot complications as have Diabetes UK and NHS Diabetes. These have been successful in raising awareness of the problem but the local multi-disciplinary teams need clear practical advice on how to manage the foot in diabetes and deliver high quality care. With the current interest in improving outcomes for patients with foot complications this is an ideal time to make a practical evidence-based handbook available. This book will provide clear practical guidelines on how to manage all aspects of the foot in diabetes as well as an in-depth analysis of the most recent evidence. The book will be based on care pathways with algorithms for each section so it would be of practical value in any clinic in primary or secondary care. It will appeal to a wide range of health care professionals treating people with diabetes: vascular surgeons and trainees, orthopaedic surgeons, diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and tissue viability nurses.

Foot and ankle surgery has grown rapidly within the last 20 years, due to international collaboration between podiatric, orthopaedic, and trauma surgeons from around the globe. This book aims to provide trainees with a general overview of topics encountered in foot and ankle surgery, by presenting the general surgery section published originally within International Advances in Foot and Ankle Surgery. While this book does not exclude scientific background, it emphasizes a practical, hands-on approach. To meet the demand of all foot and ankle surgeons, the book encompasses forefoot and rearfoot deformities as well as reconstructive surgery of the diabetic foot. This book will appeal to trainees who have yet to specialise, but need access to an easy reference companion within general foot and ankle surgery.

Nursing Procedures and Protocols is designed to help nurses react to clinical situations appropriately with little or no guidance from colleagues. Protocols represent the framework for management of a specific disorder or clinical situation, while the procedures that compliment a specific protocol represent the numerous detailed steps for implementing that protocol. This book features over 300 major peer-reviewed protocols and nursing procedures on a wide range of clinical topics. Each procedure is described in sequential step-by-step detail. Also included are over 300 illustrations, checklists, tables, and flowcharts. Icons are used throughout the book to draw attention to the evidence base for a particular protocol, alerts for specific considerations related to the protocol, and troubleshooting tips for equipment used in the protocol.
