A graceful biography that was a #1 national bestseller, Flint & Feather confirms Charlotte Gray’s position as a master biographer, a writer with a rare gift for transforming a historical character into a living, breathing woman who immediately captures our imagination. In Flint & Feather, Charlotte Gray explores the life of this nineteenth-century daughter of a Mohawk chief and English gentlewoman, creating a fascinating portrait of a young woman equally at home on the stage in her “Indian” costume and in the salons of the rich and powerful. Uncovering Pauline Johnson’s complex and dramatic personality, Flint & Feather is studded with triumph and tragedy, mystery and romance—a first-rate biography blending turn-of-the-century Canadian history and the vibrant story of a woman whose unforgettable voice still echoes through the years.

Taelo Taelo lived more than thirty thousand years ago in the US northwest. The Early Years are stories of Taelo and Golden Hawk in their early years In The Golden Feather this same team takes the next step in their development. They first travel South into the Andes of South America. They meet the people living in those areas. In The Journey of Discovery Taelo and Golden Hawk travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean and see the wonders of nature. In Dangerous Passage the team travels across the northern ice bridge to the origin of their race. In Condor Clan Slingers the team returns to aid the Condor Clan in their battle against an aggressive Warrior Clan. In Circumvention Taelo discovers that the world is like a round boulder. It is rough and pitted but by moving in one direction you return to were you started. In the Journey of Sages, Taelo guides the Sages of his clan on trip around the Pacific. They meet people on the far side. The Golden Feather The giant black bird soared gracefully high above towering snowcapped mountains. An Eagle almost as large as large flew effortlessly below. Taelo did not know the mountains. He knew he was in a new place, but it also felt ancient. A cool morning breeze lifted the hide covering the entrance to his hutch. Perhaps he would understand the dream. Golden Hawk had a similar dream. He saw a strange village built into the mountain. Taelo brought up the fact that he and Golden Hawk were planning on a trek he asked the team if they were interested in such a venture. Every one of the team wanted to come. Little Otter voiced the one possible barrier the team might face. Would the Elk Clan leaders allow them to leave at such a time? They cleared the hurtle with the leadership. Their journey to the far southern mountains led to the discovery of an advanced population, the Condor Clan. All seems well until their new friend, Bold Walker, son of the Condor Clan leader, shares the fact that his sister, Feather-in-the-Wind, has been selected to be sacrificed to the Condor. This event happened every ten seasonal cycles. The selection of the young woman to be sacrificed to be the mate of the Condor was made based on the beauty and the pureness of the one that was chosen. Feather-in-the-Wind is celebrated by the entire Condor Clan and led up the mountain to the cave of the Condor. There she is placed next to more than one hundred frozen beautiful former sacrifices. She is saved by Quiet Rabbit and Busy Bee. Taelo and the team take her with them and return to the Elk Clan. They meet an enemy Warrior Clan on their return journey. This obstacle is overcome. This adventure earns Taelo the distinction of becoming a member of all the Clans and he is awarded the Golden Feather.

"These legends (with two or three exceptions) were told to me personally by my honored friend, the late Chief Joe Capilano, of Vancouver, whom I had the privilege of first meeting in London in 1906, when he visited England and was received at Buckingham Palace by their Majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. To the fact that I was able to greet Chief Capilano in the Chinook tongue, while we were both many thousands of miles from home, I owe the friendship and the confidence which he so freely gave me when I came to reside on the Pacific coast. These legends he told me from time to time, just as the mood possessed him, and he frequently remarked that they had never been revealed to any other English-speaking person save myself."--Author's pref.
