As the Vietnam War rages, the workhorses of the Navy and the sailors that serve aboard perform stoically as they tow targeted, damaged, and salvaged ships. As the Fleet Ocean tug boats visit exotic ports-of-call, the sailors aboard soon realize that the little vessel destined to help those in need is also leading each of them on an remarkable adventure. Led by one of the best sea captains in the navy, the sailors are about to learn more about themselves than they ever could have imagined.Despite experiencing many uneventful hours crossing the Pacific Ocean towing a crane to Da Nang, the sailors soon discover that the sea is fickle as they are tossed about on stormy seas during a typhoon. But even as they chase gunrunners off the coast of Vietnam, the sailors quickly realize that the close quarters on the tug boat not only encourage camaraderie and friendships, but also prompt the kind of fury that drives a few to commit an unthinkable act. "Fleet Ocean Tug" is a compelling historical tale based on real-life events highlighting the dedication of the career sailors who kept the navy's workhorses in service through a volatile period in time.

This report presents the results of a maneuvering trial conducted on the USNS NAVAJO (T-ATF 169) which represents the T-ATF 166 Class fleet ocean tug. The ahead turning and maneuvering, astern maneuvering, and docking characteristics of the ship were investigated in calm environmental conditions. Steering with the bow thruster provides the best means of achieving good coursekeeping and maneuverability during astern operations at any speed, while maneuvering ahead with the rudders should present no problems. The turning performance of the ship should be the same in either left or right turns. The docking performance of the ship should be excellent with or without the bow thruster in calm environmental conditions. (Author).

While square-rigged sailing ships, steamboats and ferries, and ever-larger cruise and cargo-carrying vessels have made their mark on Puget Sound's maritime history, no other vessels have captured the imagination of shore-bound seafarers like tugboats. Beginning in the 1850s when the first steam-powered tugboats arrived in the Sound from the East Coast via San Francisco, company owners and their crews competed fiercely for business, towing ships, log rafts, and barges. The magnetic attraction of powerful, tough tugs both large and small is unexplainable but enduring. This book, featuring about 200 rare historic images and carefully researched text, tells the colorful story of tug boating on Puget Sound.
