Very little has been written or published on the global experience vis-a-vis information technology that puts both developed and developing countries into a larger context from which lessons can be extrapolated. Within the IT and Development fields, there has been much talk and hyperbole about the power of IT to transform the economic development process, but very little rigorous analysis has been carried out to document the global situation. The frontier of the field is to explore and understand how IT is being used in the developing world, what the barriers to IT diffusion and adoption are in developing countries, and what the main lessons are from the developing world that can aid in designing policies and solutions that can overcome the international digital divide. The Global Information Technology Readiness Report 2001-2002 provides the first comprehensive and comparative analysis of the diffusion and use of information technology in 70 countries around the world. The Report consists of three main sections: a series of country rankings comparing the global experience of different nations based on various crieteria of IT readiness; a collection of essays by recognized experts on a series of IT-related subjects key to understanding the issues involved in extending the benefits of IT to the developing world; and country profiles that highlight the overall situation and major trends relating to IT within each country. The scope of the Report is quite ambitious, as is the methodology, as data has been generated through a series of surveys of global business leaders. Both the range and depth of the issues and data make the Global Information Technology Readiness Report 2001-2002 a unique and valuable publication.

This 2001 Annual Report reviews economic developments in the world during FY2000. Output growth in emerging Asia picked up in 2000 as this region continued its recovery from the 1997–98 crisis. The pace of economic expansion, however, slowed from mid-2000, largely as a result of the U.S. slowdown, higher oil prices, a decline in regional equity markets, and, in some countries, concerns about delays of corporate and financial restructuring and a decline in electronics exports. The financial year 2001 saw the IMF actively engaged in the process of reform.

UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This report details the accomplishments and activities of UNICEF for the year 2000. The report begins with a timeline describing major accomplishments from 1990 to 2000 and the mission statement. The overview statement from the executive director pledges that UNICEF will continue to build partnerships dedicated to mobilizing the resources necessary to realize children's rights and meet their basic needs. The report next describes the Global Movement for Children as a coalition of governments, United Nations agencies, nongovernmental organizations, private sector and community groups, and families and children who are dedicated to improving children's lives. The accomplishments of UNICEF in 2000 are then detailed, including implementing immunization programs, improving access to education, providing children and adolescents with opportunities for participation in community life, and using media to reinforce health messages to children and adolescents and inform them of their rights. The report describes programs in partnership with the corporate community and delineates international celebrity spokespersons. Information is included on UNICEF's income (by source of funding) for each nation and agency. The report also delineates expenditures by sector, noting that 40 percent of expenditures are for child health and 18 percent for education. The funds targeted for particular programs are listed by program. The report concludes with contact information for various UNICEF committees. (KB)

For over a decade, central and eastern Europe has been at the center of one of the most profound economic and political transformation in history. At the start of the 1990's, the region embarked on an ambitious reform program to depart from central planning towards more market-based economies. A decade later, and amid significant difficulties, the region has achieved remarkable accomplishments, with several countries becoming increasingly integrated into the global economy. Political structures have been transformed and new institutions have emerged. Indeed, the progress in structural reforms achieved in the region has been so substantial that several countries are now at the threshold of European Union membership. Aware of the significance of the successful integration of central and eastern Europe into the global economy, the World Economic Forum and Harvard University are proud to introduce The European Competitiveness and Transition Report, a thorough review of the transition process that has unfolded in the last decade. This comprehensive report presents new data and expert commentary on what the facts say about the enlargement of the European Union and the competitiveness and growth potential of both Europe and the candidate countries. It addresses the many important factors that will determine how these countries will fare in terms of economic growth over the next ten to twenty years. Written by independent experts, The European Competitiveness and Transition Report 2001-2002 is a truly unique data-driven guide that lays out the facts and reveals the real issues behind European enlargement.
