When doors are opened during our life’s journey, God has a plan for each one of us. When your life’s journey is finished, you will have experienced a full circle from childhood to many years later. These experiences are for your own personal growth with more knowledge for your next experience. The stories that are in this book are my doors being opened and closed as God was sending me to care for these patients who were being mistreated. I gave my patients the commitment of honesty, integrity, and my skills until God decided to move them on to be with Him. When a door is closed, it is time to move on to a door that God has opened for me to protect and care for another patient. These patients that I am sharing with you were instrumental in my life for a period of thirty years. I was not able to have conversations with the senility or traumatized patients from strokes. Our communications consisted of one word of response such as a yes or no, if I could hear it. I learned to be perceptive of their needs and with our own form of communication. The stories that are in this book are my doors being opened and closed as God was sending me to care for another patients who were being neglected. I was to protect and care for another patient. Should you recognize any of these stories or experiences that I have described, or they appear to be a familiar scenario, the names have been changed to protect the patients, the families, the care givers, and any others that were involved. God sent me on these journeys for all of us to benefit and know He is in control at all times. This book is dedicated to my patients, who were victimized by selfish, greedy, uncaring family members and friends. The comradery I had with these patients who appreciated my protection and care have left their “footprints in my heart” forever.

Much of the world we live in is perceived by many as dangerous and unfriendly. Well into his early adulthood, the author thought so, to the extent that he had little interest in traveling outside the boundaries of his homeland. While the author proclaimed Christian faith early in his professional career, that proclamation did not extend to sharing that faith with others outside the United States or even locally outside the author's comfort zone. The author refrained from personally interacting with people of unfamiliar cultures, let alone those in foreign locales deemed difficult or even impossible to reach and interact with. Then an incredible transformation took place in the author's life. Roughly thirteen years into the author's professional career, his fear of the unknown and unfamiliar cultures was miraculously removed from his being. Shortly after, his staunch commitment to advance planning of trip details was eradicated little by little. Following the removal of fear of the unknown from the author's persona, he was, time and again, drawn into experiences falling further and further outside his previous comfort zone. Over time, the author was increasingly blessed with amazing new friendships overseas, wonderful ties with families abroad, and incredible faith-sharing opportunities in foreign lands--"independent" travels that have taken him to nearly ninety countries worldwide. As I walk down the path of life, I find that many things around me affect the way I think and the decisions I make. One of the biggest effects of my life was the night of the Tet Offensive in Vietnam in 1968. At 4:00 a.m., our bomb dump blew up, and our fuel cell, with fuel for three squadrons of aircraft, blew up. Our perimeter was breached. I thought I was going to check out. I made a promise to the good Lord that I would be a productive member of society. He has been a big part of every decision I have made. I know that the day comes. I don’t meet His standard or requirements. He will dial up my number. Today, at age seventy-five years old, my doctor told me to get my life in order. I made out my will. And I made up a living will. I set up and paid for my funeral, sold everything I didn’t need. When the time comes to meet my maker, I will thank Him for allowing me to continue down my path of life. Only then will I know how He feels about my journey.
