This PhD thesis is essentially a collection of six sequential articles on dynamics of accountability in the reformed employment and welfare administration in different countries. The first article examines how recent changes in the governance of employment services in three European countries (Denmark, Germany and Norway) have influenced accountability relationships from a very wide-ranging perspective. It starts from the overall assumption in the literature that accountability relationships are becoming more numerous and complex, and that these changes may lead to multiple accountability disorder. The article explores these assumptions by analyzing the different actors involved and the information requested in the new governance arrangements in all three countries. It concludes that the considerable changes in organizational arrangements and more managerial information demanded and provided have led to more shared forms of accountability. Nevertheless, a clear development towards less political or administrative accountability could ...

Character behavior and responsibility are foundational aspects of personal development and societal well-being. Our behavior is a reflection of our character, encompassing traits such as honesty, integrity, empathy, and accountability. Responsibility, on the other hand, entails recognizing our obligations towards ourselves, others, and the broader community. Together, character behavior and responsibility shape how we interact with the world around us, influencing our actions, decisions, and relationships. In this exploration, we delve into the components of character, examining the influence of values, beliefs, and morals on behavior. We also explore the concept of personal responsibility, discussing its significance in both personal and social contexts. Additionally, we consider the role of character and responsibility in various aspects of life, including relationships, the workplace, family dynamics, and contributing to the community and society.

In this insightful new book, Moncrieffe argues that the traditionally narrow interpretation of accountability obscures relationships, power dynamics, structures, processes and complexities. The relational view, in contrast, seeks to understand the ways in which people perform in their roles as social actors, and how the quality of relationships influences the character of accountability. This book will provide a grounded theoretical background to accountability, using vivid case evidence to emphasize the significance of relational approaches to accountability using empirical data (from Jamaica, Haiti, Ethiopia and Uganda). Ultimately arguing that accountability is much more than a managerial concept; rather, it is deeply social and political. The result is a unique, coherent, perspective that will both explain and 'debunk' this central developmental concept.

As a cultural critic and social commentator, Kevin Samuels sparked dialogues that resonated worldwide, influencing and provoking thought on numerous societal issues. This book captures the essence of his impactful philosophy, presenting it through a lens that encourages deep reflection and rigorous discussion, much like the Socratic dialogues that have shaped intellectual thought for centuries. Structured in a dialogical format reminiscent of Socratic teaching, this work explores the nuanced views Samuels held on topics from interpersonal relationships to self-improvement, and economic stability to societal roles. It delves into his provocative insights on realism and practicality, while also considering the legacy he sought to create. By weaving together Samuels’ candid discussions with a Socratic approach to questioning and dialogue, the book invites readers to explore complex ideas and reconsider their own beliefs and assumptions. Moreover, "Kevin Samuels' Guide to Life" confronts the controversies surrounding its subject with integrity and balance. It examines the criticism of Samuels being a negative influence, paralleling these accusations with those faced by Socrates, who was similarly misunderstood in his time. The book argues that, far from corrupting minds, both figures spurred critical thinking, challenged existing beliefs, and encouraged intellectual and personal growth through their questioning and dialogues. This is not just a retrospective on a figure known for his directness and fervor. It is an invitation to engage with his ideas actively, to debate and to question, and to discover one’s own truths through the Socratic method of inquiry and discussion. It promises to extend the lifespan of Samuels' teachings, allowing them to continue to challenge and inspire, much as they have done during his life. Kevin Samuels' Guide to Life: A Socratic Exploration of the Teachings of Kevin Samuels" offers more than just insights—it initiates a dialogue about critical societal issues, urging readers to think deeply and live meaningfully. This book is an essential read for anyone ready to engage with ideas that provoke and persuade, challenging us to refine our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
