This study was an attempt to gain a greater awareness of the lived experience of the "whole mother." the research consisted of interviews with six Caucasian mothers, who each had at least two children, with one of them currently between the ages of 12 and 18. Analysis of the interview data showed a common fear of not being good enough as a mother. This concept may be a shadow aspect of the archetypal mother, which is referred to in this paper as the "too good mother." Themes surrounding the integration of the "too good mother" into a "whole mother" are highlighted as: "resolving the Martha Stewart complex," the ways in which judgment, guilt and expectations influence wholeness; "remembering the oxygen mask," the importance of self-care and support systems; "it's not the wind, it's the set of the sail," individual differences and identity formation; "loving and letting go," the task of launching children into adulthood through unconditional love; and "living in the gray area," the paradoxical nature of mothering. the summary draws conclusions regarding the qualities of wholeness that are necessary for healthy parenting relationships. These characteristics include compassion, respect, nurturing and creating a democratic home environment. A "whole mother" is one who is able to hold these qualities in balance with an understanding of the human condition and its imperfections.

Download Understanding the Whole Student Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Understanding the Whole Student presents a holistic approach to multicultural educational issues by viewing them in terms of the student as a physical, psychosocial, cognitive, ethical, and spiritual being. Conversely, these levels of a student's being cannot be seen apart from the student's cultural identities. This unique book demonstrates that, in a pluralistic democracy, good teaching and deep learning must be multicultural and must look at the student as a whole being, not just as a future worker in a transnational corporate economy as is currently the case with both neo-liberal and neo-conservative programs for 'reform.' The authors contend that good education is, and must be, multicultural in order to gain a deeper perspective on issues under analysis in the classroom through the sharing and negotiating of many different cultural perspectives.

Download San Tzu Ching Explicated, the Classical Initiation to Classic Chinese Couplet I to XI Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
San Tzu Ching Explicated: The Classical Initiation to Classic Chinese, couplets I to XI is an exegetical study of the first verses of the "Trimetrical Classic, Explicated" (San tzu ching hsun ku), a school book of the purest Neo-Confucian tradition. From its first publication in 1666 until the beginning of the twentieth century, it introduced schoolboys all over East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Annam) to classic Chinese culture. The textbook is composed on one hand of versified sentences to be copied and learned by heart by students, and on the other hand of scholarly expositions to be studied by schoolmasters whose teaching certificates were renewed every three years following examinations. In its roughly one hundred couplets and their commentary, it encompasses the entire spiritual and material universe of pre-modern China. The present study, however, limits itself to the couplets I-XI. They present a physiological definition of mankind, retracing man's intellectual development (and appropriate pedagogical methods) from the moment of conception until the completion of final academic degrees and appointment to government office. For advanced students of Sinology this volume is suitable as an introduction to the "exalted style" (ku wen) and to scholarly commentary style including the art of its accurate reading. It is also intended for East Asians everywhere who wish to gain an authentic picture of the literate and pedagogical culture of their ancestors.

BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Download Making Babies Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'An unadulterated delight...suffused with a sense of love and very, very funny' Maggie O'Farrell It's 2004 and Anne Enright, one of Ireland's most remarkable writers, has just had two babies: a girl and a boy. Making Babies, is the intimate, engaging, and very funny record of the journey from early pregnancy to age two. Written in dispatches, typed with a sleeping baby in the room, it has the rush of good news - full of the mess, the glory, and the raw shock of it all. An antidote to the high-minded, polemical 'How-to' baby manuals, Making Babies also bears a visceral and dreamlike witness to the first years of parenthood. Anne Enright wrote the truth of it as it happened, because, for these months and years, it is impossible for a woman to lie.
