Expanding Nationalisms at World’s Fairs: Identity, Diversity, and Exchange, 1851–1915 introduces the subject of international exhibitions to art and design historians and a wider audience as a resource for understanding the broad and varied political meanings of design during a period of rapid industrialization, developing nationalism, imperialism, expanding trade and the emergence of a consumer society. Its chapters, written by both established and emerging scholars, are global in scope, and demonstrate specific networks of communication and exchange among designers, manufacturers, markets and nations on the modern world stage from the second half of the nineteenth century into the beginning of the twentieth. This intriguing study of Mexico's participation in world's fairs from 1889 to 1929 explores Mexico's self-presentation at these fairs as a reflection of the country's drive toward nationalization and a modernized image. According to conventional wisdom, Italy was not an influential participant in the nationalistic and imperialistic discourses that world's fairs produced in countries such as Great Britain, France, and the United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, Italy hosted numerous national and international exhibitions expounding notions of national identity, imperial expansion, technological progress, and capitalist growth. World's Fairs Italian-Style explores world's fairs in Italy at the turn of the twentieth century in comparison to their more famous counterparts in France, England, and the United States. Cristina Della Coletta demonstrates that, because of its social fragmentation and hybrid history, Italy was a site of both hegemony and subordination – an aspiring imperial power whose colonization started from within. The eminent physician and anatomist Dr William Hunter (1718-1783) made an important and significant contribution to the history of collecting and the promotion of the fine arts in Britain in the eighteenth century. Born at the family home in East Calderwood, he matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1731 and was greatly influenced by some of the most important philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, including Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746). He quickly abandoned his studies in theology for Medicine and, in 1740, left Scotland for London where he steadily acquired a reputation as an energetic and astute practitioner; he combined his working life as an anatomist successfully with a wide range of interests in natural history, including mineralogy, conchology, botany and ornithology; and in antiquities, books, medals and artefacts; in the fine arts, he worked with artists and dealers and came to own a number of beautiful oil paintings and volumes of extremely fine prints. He built an impressive school of anatomy and a museum which housed these substantial and important collections. William Hunter’s life and work is the subject of this book, a cultural-anthropological account of his influence and legacy as an anatomist, physician, collector, teacher and demonstrator. Combining Hunter’s lectures to students of anatomy with his teaching at the St Martin’s Lane Academy, his patronage of artists, such as Robert Edge Pine, George Stubbs and Johan Zoffany, and his associations with artists at the Royal Academy of Arts, the book positions Hunter at the very centre of artistic, scientific and cultural life in London during the period, presenting a sustained and critical account of the relationship between anatomy and artists over the course of the long eighteenth century.

World's fairs have changed the global modern landscape, joining nations while also promoting nationalism and, at times, imperialist agendas. This thesis examines two prominent world exhibitions, the Paris 1867 Exposition Universelle and the St. Louis 1904 Louisiana Purchase International Exposition, and it investigates the methodology each nation deployed to portray its identity through the representation of its own and other cultures. Particularly in their commemorations of colonial endeavors, each fair presented a national identity that reveals a particular ideology through exhibition classification systems. In particular, as I will show, the Paris Exposition focused on industry and the St. Louis Fair emphasized race. As this thesis will demonstrate, the 1867 Exposition Universelle and the Louisiana Purchase International Exposition are the best examples of the use of nationalism and "othering" in the form of exhibitions.^As I will show, we can sum up these fairs in two very different ways, each of which reflects a different set of national priorities from cities that were attempting to present their respective nations as the most progressive of their time. Specifically, the French Exposition collected and surveyed machinery and consumer goods to display their nation as technologically progressive. By contrast, the United States presented their national pride through the celebration of their imperialistic endeavors, exhibiting Native Americans as well as non-western races deemed inferior by the U.S. Technological innovation was the most significant for France, whereas for the U.S., the St. Louis Fair provided the opportunity to further the ideology of Manifest Destiny and other racist ideas. The display of culture and progress at the Paris Exposition served as a paradigm for the St. Louis Fair; the display of French nationalism was superseded by the display of race at St. Louis.^The structure and display of national pride at the 1867 Exposition developed and increased with each subsequent world's fair, leading to the imperial display of race at the St. Louis Fair.
