Download Evolving Medical Imaging Techniques, An Issue of PET Clinics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This issue examines PET-MRI with evolving but potentially competing technologies. The guest editors have put together an extremely timely issue as practicing radiologists are increasingly curious about the role of diffusion weighted imaging with MRI as a competing or a complementary technique to PET.

The discovery of the x-ray in 1895 proved to be one of the most transformative breakthroughs in the history of science. It ushered in a new era in medicine, allowing physicians and patients to peer inside the living human body, without the use of a scalpel, to assess health and diagnose diseases. The x-ray opened up the world of the very small, allowing us to determine the structure of the molecules of which we are made. It also revealed the true nature of the largest and oldest objects in the universe, including the universe itself. Today it has spawned amazing new imaging techniques, including ultrasound, CT scanning, MR imaging, and nuclear medicine, which have opened up remarkable new windows on the structure and function of the human body. This book recounts the stories of the remarkable physicians and scientists who developed these new imaging technologies. It tells the stories of real patients whose lives have been touched, transformed, and in many cases saved by medical imaging. And it shines new light on the surprising ways x-rays have transformed our view of ourselves and the world we inhabit. Richly illustrated with both historical images and imaging studies of real patients, X-ray Vision is a feast for the eyes as well as the mind.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a rapidly evolving technique which is having a significant impact on medical imaging. Only a few years ago, al though Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was well known as an important analytical technique in the field of chemical analysis, it was effectively un known in medical circles. Following the initial work of PAUL LAUTERBUR and RAYMOND DAMADIAN in the early 1970s demonstrating that it was possible to use NMR to produce im ages, progress in the medical fields was relatively slow. Recently, however, with the availability of commercial systems, progress has been very rapid, with increasing acceptance of MRI as a basic imaging technique, and the develop ment of exciting new applications. MRI is a relatively complex technique. First, the image depends on many more intrinsic and extrinsic parameters than it does of in techniques like X-ra diography and computed tomography, and secondly, the intrinsic parameters such as T1 and T2 are conceptually complex, involving ideas not usually de scribed in traditional medical imaging courses. In order to produce good MR images efficiently, and to obtain the maximum information from them, it is necessary to appreciate, if not to fully understand, these parameters. Further more, knowledge of how the image is produced helps in appreciating the ori gin of the artifacts sometimes found in MRI due to effects like patient motion and fluid flow.
