Excerpt from Epidemic Meningitis, or Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis Gentlemen: It is a pleasure, and indeed it is almost a duty, to inscribe this little work to you, who enjoyed with me the rare opportunity of studying an epidemic of meningitis. It will, perhaps, serve to recall many things which you would otherwise have forgotten, and to impress you with a clearer idea of this curious disease than you could obtain from the fragmentary remarks made at our clinical conferences. The epidemics in camp and garrison life are also another instance of this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Once suspected that local conditions would be found, such as would throw light upon the hitherto obscure etiology of this and kindred forms of disease. With the first well-marked group of cases that occurred late in J anu ary, special investigations were instituted, to ascertain, if possible, what might be the cause. The conditions of defective local drainage were found to be such as would necessarily produce disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Epidemic Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis: From the Sears Pathological Laboratory of the Harvard Medical School It is difficult to give a satisfactory explanation of such cases. It seems improbable that the organisms were dead, and therefore did not stain in the cells, or grow on the se rum, three days after the onset with persistence of severe acute symptoms. Excerpt from Cerebro-Spinal Fever: The Etiology, Symptomatology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Epidemic Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis During the past few years a considerable amount of progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebro-spinal fever. The outbreak of this disease in England in 1915 and the methods adopted to combat it afforded exceptional opportunities for its study. The authors of this volume were fortunately placed for the study and investigation of cerebro-spinal fever in that the one was a practising neurologist and the other a professional pathologist and bacteriologist. Being posted for duty at Woolwich they became responsible for the investigation, prevention and treatment of cerebro-spinal fever among the troops in the Woolwich military district. In the following pages are given the results of these investigations and observations extending over a period of three years, together with some observations upon cases which they had previously seen in civil life. In addition, the literature dealing with the disease has been consulted, and all work necessary to bring the subject thoroughly up to date has been incorporated. A full bibliography is appended. As the bulk of the work has been carried out while the authors were actively engaged in military duties, they are conscious that many imperfections may have crept into the text as a consequence. Nevertheless they hope that the book will prove useful to those who at any time may have to deal with an outbreak of cerebro-spinal fever either in an epidemic or sporadic form. The large number of troops at present mobilised in this country and America, as well as those that are returning from the various seats of war, render it an opportune time for the appearance of this book. Excerpt from A Contribution to Our Knowledge of Epidemic Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis The water supply of Lonaconing is derived partly from surface wells and partly from cisterns, and we actually observed during a thaw the entrance of surface water and the accompanying filth directly into wells which were in daily use for drinking and culinary purposes. Significant, too, is the fact that in the valley the wells are situated often only a few feet from the creek, and it is certainly not hard to believe that the contaminated water from the creek could penetrate through the soil and become mixed with the water. Of the wells. The slaughter-houses are in the heart of the town upon the banks of the creek, and the blood and waste material from these find their way into its waters. These unsanitary conditions are not confined to Lonaconing alone, but in its course George's Creek passes through a number of small towns, each of which adds its quota to the general filth, and only a short time ago an investigating party inspecting the river between Western port and the Phoenix mines found among other things carcasses of horses in the stream or lying along the banks.
