Excerpt from Elements and Science of English Versification It Is the desire of the author to create a greater love for poetry. I do not think it is possible to make great poets any more than it is possible to create great musicians, sculptors, artists, or orators. All must be born with the spark of genius inherent within the soul. I believe, however, that even those possessed of great genius may profit by the research of others, and frequently are induced to follow their art by suggestions and rules pointed out to them. To such who possess real genius from a poetic standpoint this work may be of benefit. Another class to be benefited are readers who love poetry and make a study of it, and yet fail to receive the benefits or see the beauties of true poetry simply because they fail to understand the technique. It is a pleasure to be able to scan critically that which we read. If, however, we are unable to criticise for ourselves the merits of a poem from every standpoint, we necessarily lose much of the real pleasure of the reading. To be able to tell the measure, the rhythm, and the number of feet a verse contains is in every sense a satisfaction to the reader of a poem; yet, not one-third of those who read poetry know anything whatever about measure, feet, or rhythm. They realize there is a certain jingle to the stanza that pleases them, and that is all they know about it. Excerpt from The Elements of English Versification As to concise statements and restricted illustrations, the attempt has been to make these suggestive of what is to be supplied in the way of explanation and amplification. The teacher should thus be led to expound the fuller im port of the principles and conventionalities of the art and to illustrate the more complete range of their application. But for the purpose of elementary instruction - and this is the principal purpose to be served - the book is in tended to be in itself as adequate as possible. All that is set forth in it should be thoroughly learned in connection with introductory courses in literature. Excerpt from The Principles of English Versification The other inconvenience is that of seeming to deny the real poetry by our preoccupation with its metrical expression. Under pretence that we want to study it more in detail, we pulverize the statue. This is an old charge, and our answer is easy. For, however it may be with the statue, a poem is never pulverized; it is still there on the page! No amount of analyzing can injure the poem. If we think it has injured us, even then we err, and need only recall our natural aversion to hard labor. In nearly every instance it was the work and not the analysis that bothered us. This is a small book and therefore not exhaustive. And since it is as elementary, especially in the treat ment of the principles of rhythm, as is consistent with a measure of thoroughness, the apparatus of mere learning has been suppressed, even where it might perhaps seem needed, as in footnote references to the scientific investigations on which part of the text is based. I have consulted and used, of course, all the books and articles I could find that had anything of value to offer; but I have rarely cited them, not be cause I wish to conceal my indebtedness, but because there is no room for elaborate documentation in such a book as this. On the other hand, I owe a very great deal, both directly and indirectly, to Professor Bliss Perry although my manuscript was finished before I saw his Study of Poetry; and this debt I wish to acknowledge most fully and gratefully. Excerpt from The Science of English Verse If Puttenham in the sixteenth century could wish to make the art of poetry "vulgar for all English men's use," such a desire in the nineteenth must needs become a religious aspiration. For under our new dispensation the preacher must soon be a poet, as were the preachers before him under the old. To reach an audience of a variety so prodigious as to range from the agnostic to the devotee, no forms of less subtlety than those of tone can be effective. A certain wholly unconscious step already made in this direction by society gives a confirmation of fact to this view which perhaps no argument can strengthen: I mean the now common use of music as a religious art. Music already occupies one end of the church: the same inward need will call poetry to the other. How the path of spiritual development which has arrived at the former phenomenon must presently reach the latter will appear more clearly in the course of the demonstration to follow, which gives an account of the true relations between music and verse.
