Biography and political biography of James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893), who was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania--and lived in Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Kentucky before he married and settled in Augusta, Maine. There he was active in politics on both a state and national level, and was a major candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 1880. In this candidacy he opposed by Chester A. Arthur, who won the nomination under the management of John A. Logan. Logan became the Vice President, and Blaine became the Secretary of State during Arthur's presidency.
