Are the nation's ports adequate for our present and future needs? This volume points out that no significant new deep-water construction has occurred for a decade, and provides the information and analysis needed to goad the ports and the federal government into action. The book asks three questions: Is additional port construction and maintenance dredging needed now or over the next 20 years? What would prevent dredging if it is needed? What alternatives could make additional dredging possible? The book identifies several problems in dredging ports, including the long interval between a decision to deepen a port and the time the alterations are complete. The United States needs to speed port construction to meet changing needs, and the committee recommends that we prepare for future needs by dredging now.

"Best Management Practices (BMPs) are defined herein as the physical, structural and/or managerial practices that when used singly or in combination, prevent or minimize adverse impacts to environmental resources resulting from coastal construction activities. The majority of existing BMPs that address water quality and sedimentation impacts have been developed for upland construction activities in order to reduce or eliminate runoff of pollutants and sediment into wetlands and surface waters. BMPs were first developed and implemented by the Soils Conservation Service in response to significant soil losses on farms due to wind and water-based erosion (Helms 2007). Examples include contour plowing and maintenance of tree lines along farm field boundaries. The principal goal is maintaining water quality and eliminating or reducing erosion generated sedimentation. However, existing BMPs for marine construction in the open ocean environment for the protection of submerged aquatic resources are fewer in number"--Introduction.

Port engineering primarily deals with the design, construction, operation, management, and maintenance of ports, overlapping with many other disciplines. This book provides an introductory text to prospective (graduate) port engineers and presents a wide variety of port subjects for practicing engineers. It covers almost all topics related to port engineering in a fundamental way, including dredging, marine aids to navigation, environmental issues, containers, liquid bulk, dry bulk, general cargo, multipurpose, roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro), fishing, and ferry terminals. Discussions are targeted at a conceptual design level. Other features: • Aspects of port engineering are discussed, including shipping, maritime trade, environmental aspects (such as climate change), resilience of ports, nature-based solutions, and port management (such as security, equipment, slurry pumping, and so forth). • Illustrates the design of port terminals. • Discusses site selection for a new port, the factors to be considered, and ways to compare different potential port sites. • Explores asset management and repair of marine structures. • Includes case studies from around the world, examples, and practical and user-friendly guidelines.

Contemporary time has seen alarming environmental revolt that is calls for attention and concern about the biosphere world, a condition that calls for need to use advantage of human improved knowledge and civilization in science engineering to develop proactive, efficient and predictive based system that meet reliability and sustainability requirement as well to reduce uncertainty components of system design. Proactive based philosophy under safety and environmental framework should be exercise on all level of system life cycle, including design, construction, operation and disposal. Selection of all element of the life cycle should be responsibly done and pollution impact of the system to the environment and community should be mitigated. The book present application of risk and reliability analysis to various cases of marine system and subsystem, application of risk method ranging from qualitative, quantitative to simulation and analytical approach is presented.
