Does the early bird really catch the worm, or end up healthy, wealthy, and wise? Can some people really exist on just a few hours' sleep a night? Does everybody dream? Do fish dream? How did people cope before alarm clocks and caffeine? And is anybody getting enough sleep? Even though we will devote a third of our lives to sleep, we still know remarkably little about its origins and purpose. Paul Martin's Counting Sheep answers these questions and more in this illuminating work of popular science. Even the wonders of yawning, the perils of sleepwalking, and the strange ubiquity of nocturnal erections are explained in full. To sleep, to dream: Counting Sheep reflects the centrality of these activities to our lives and can help readers respect, understand, and extract more pleasure from that delicious time when they're lost to the world.

In this book, Mark Solms chronicles a fascinating effort to systematically apply the clinico-anatomical method to the study of dreams. The purpose of the effort was to place disorders of dreaming on an equivalent footing with those of other higher mental functions such as the aphasias, apraxias, and agnosias. Modern knowledge of the neurological organization of human mental functions was grounded upon systematic clinico-anatomical investigations of these functions under neuropathological conditions. It therefore seemed reasonable to assume that equivalent research into dreaming would provide analogous insights into the cerebral organization of this important but neglected function. Accordingly, the main thrust of the study was to identify changes in dreaming that are systematically associated with focal cerebral pathology and to describe the clinical and anatomical characteristics of those changes. The goal, in short, was to establish a nosology of dream disorders with neuropathological significance. Unless dreaming turned out to be organized in a fundamentally different way than other mental functions, there was every reason to expect that this research would cast light on the cerebral organization of the normal dream process.

"Kevin Kautzman, an American playwright here making his British debut, has hit upon an important subject: how we deal with dementia and attendant problems, in a world where the old are growing ever larger in number... It's difficult to describe the play without revealing the moral dilemma it poses. All I can say is that it takes the form of a fraught family reunion in which an elderly couple invite their grownup children to what looks like a Christmas dinner even though it is only mid-June. Gene, the dad, has an unspecified terminal illness, and his wife, Mary, who periodically lapses into fantasies of being a Sumerian fertility goddess, has only the shakiest grasp on reality. Together they have made a big decision which they announce to Robert, a recovering addict, and their adopted daughter, Melissa, who is into tantric healing. ...Kautzman has written a perfectly good family play, with palpable echoes of O'Neill..." Michael Billington, The Guardian "There is a feeling of raw truth about this play that is constantly absorbing." Whats On Stage "A funny, heartwarming and powerful story of hope and loss-as an elderly couple plan their last days on earth." Broadway World "A play that seeks to tug at your heartstrings and not overburden you with guilt and scenes of familial dysfunction." Everything Theatre "Witty, insightful." Time Out "An original insight into dementia." Stage "The story is moving and the questions Kautzman asks of death and aging are resounding." A Younger Theatre "[Kautzman] tackles serious themes without ever being heavy-handed or too earnest." Public Reviews
