This study looks at the factors, both organisational and practical, affecting the activity and participation rates of women doctors. It is estimated that half of those entering medical schools will be women by the 1990s, and it is therefore important to assess the main influences on the careers of women doctors. Their contribution will be a key factor in future medical manpower planning and the Department of Health and Social Security, in initiating this research, recognised that it required more information on the careers of women doctors for four main purposes: 1) to be able to project more accurately the contribution women doctors will make in future towards the total supply of doctors, and, in particular, to anticipate any changes or trends in activity or participation rates; 2) to identify the main obstacles, whether institutional or domestic, which prevent women from participating as fully as they would like in medicine; 3) to improve the usefulness, accuracy and realism of careers advice in medicine at all stages from school to post-graduate training; 4) to assess the extent to which women doctors have found their aspirations limited more by the demands of the medical career system, based on the assumption of unbroken careers and full-time working, rather than by their own ambitions.

Wanting to provide an insider's view of the rewards and difficulties of a medical career, Dr. Leonard Laster (physician, researcher, teacher, and columnist) interviewed 32 physicians to learn how their careers developed. We encounter a cornucopia of commonalities that have directed their professional lives. One became a physician to homeless people, another the CEO of a major pharmaceutical corporation, another a family physician after overcoming the barriers of racial prejudice, another the Surgeon General, another a state governor, and yet another the editor of one of the world's most prestigious medical journals. Life After Medical School contains reflections by training program directors on which person fits which path. Dr. Laster wisely pays much attention to whether it is more rewarding to be a generalist or a specialist. The storytellers conjure truthful portraits of their personal and professional lives as generalists. This personal career guide is of special appeal to parents and mentors of young people considering a career in medicine, to premedical and medical students, to residents-in-training, and to midcareer physicians. The book is also a treat to general readers in search of a frank and sensitive account of the nature of professionalism in medicine and what it means to be a doctor in today's swiftly changing world.

Career changes are becoming common among professionals in recent years. Doctors have the training and education to contribute to society in many beneficial ways in addition to traditional clinical practice. Yet, there is no formal mapped-out route for doctors who want to pursue alternative careers, which is where Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine comes in. Doctors at any stage, from early in training to mid-career, to nearing retirement, can use Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine to clearly evaluate the issues involved when considering a career change. Increasingly, physicians are leveraging their medical training and expertise to pursue careers in non-traditional arenas. Their goals are diverse: · Explore consulting as a way to improve patient care · Lay the foundation for a career in academic medicine · Provide leadership in healthcare · Strengthen ties between a clinic and the community · Broaden one’s experience as a medical student · As a journalist or writer, open a window onto medicine for non-experts Some physicians will pursue another degree, while others may not, in anticipation of moving into public service, business, education, law, or organized medicine. Their common ground is the desire to enhance their professional fulfillment. Drs. Urman and Ehrenfeld’s book features individual chapters on the wide array of non-traditional careers for physicians, each one written by an outstanding leader in medicine who him- or herself has successfully forged a unique career path. A final chapter brings together fascinating brief profiles – “case studies” – of physicians who have distinguished themselves professionally outside of traditional settings. Suitable for readers at any point in their medical career – practitioners, fellows, residents, and medical students – who want to explore possibilities beyond traditional medical practice, the book also sets out common-sense advice on topics such as work-life balance, mentorship, and the relationship between personality and job satisfaction.
