Araceli Cab Cumí is a contemporary Maya writer, grassroots leader, and political party activist from Mexico. She is also the only indigenous woman to have been elected to the State Congress of Yucatan, serving two terms of office. Discarded Pages is Cab Cumí's life narrative accompanied by her essays, poems, personal narratives, and political and public policy papers. Titled in honor of Cab Cumí's earliest writings which she had thrown away thinking them of little value, Discarded Pages showcases her expressions and thoughts within the context of her eventful and unusual life. In addition to translations of her work, Cab Cumí's original Spanish and Yucatec Maya writings are included in the book. Gramsci's theoretically innovative concept of the "organic intellectual" is used to analyze Cab Cumí's life and career. The book expands on Gramsci's original concept to include discussions of gender, new social movements, and the social context in which organic intellectuals labor as activists and thinkers. Throughout Discarded Pages Cab Cumí movingly represents the worldview of a Maya woman seeking to represent other Maya women.

Discarded is a horror/thriller novel set in modern day Sacramento, CA. From the night I came up with this story it was something I wanted to set apart from what has become the norm in the horror genre... You know, the gore-fests with a shallow moral (if any) that could easily be forgotten. I wanted to take horror to a level where it could be read and enjoyed on the surface but also have complex undertones for those who are intrigued to look deeper after. The story involves a beautiful Asian woman who is plucked from life by a group of men and returns from the dead for revenge. During her supernatural vendetta a decorated detective and a heart-driven rookie sift their way into the case. Along the way there are scares, there is mystery, and there is definitely blood.

From the Introduction:It should always be with some misgivings that an editor presents to the public materials which an author has discarded. By returning the materials to his files, the author has voted against publication. By resurrecting them, the editor risks exposing the author to the adverse criticism which he wished to avoid. But, at the same time, the resurrection serves a valuable purpose by making available indispensable evidence to be used by those seeking to understand the creative process. It is because they serve such a purpose that the texts published in this volume have been salvaged from Mark Twain's files. Indeed, they are doubly valuable because they aid in dispelling a myth about his own creative process which Twain himself did much to establish. In several instances Twain gave the impression that for him plotting a novel was a rather simple affair. . . . But in actuality, as the texts published in this volume illustrate, he experienced much more trouble than this statement would suggest in delimiting his fictional world, establishing its nature, and maintaining control over the characters placed therin.

Cooper Bishop is suffocating. Careening toward a dead-end future in the small Appalachian town of Festus, he dreams of escaping to the crashing waves of the California coast. Cooper longs to break free from his neglectful, alcoholic father and the haunting memories of his family’s broken past. He’s obsessed with writing stories greater than his own life experience, so when opportunity presents itself, Cooper and his friend Solomon seize it, setting off on the devil-may-care adventure of a lifetime. But the open road might not bring the freedom Cooper expects. Living by Solomon’s wits and Cooper’s imagination, the two friends scrape their way toward Hollywood as fact and fiction weave Cooper’s life together with the story he’s creating about screenwriter Eddie Vale. In this intricately developed literary departure, bestselling authors Sean Platt and Johnny B Truant explore the powerful force of story and how seemingly inconsequential choices create shockwaves that resonate for decades.Platt and Truant’s masterful narrative will unravel you and challenge your understanding of success, family, and courage.
