Dirt Persuasion examines a watershed moment in U.S. environmental politics: the fight over the Keystone XL Pipeline. The complex interplay of resources extraction industries with grassroots environmentalism and advocacy has transformed the role of activists in the contemporary public sphere. Bold Nebraska’s years-long fight against pipeline company TransCanada provides a compelling case study: a contemporary state-level organization that simultaneously challenged political and business leaders in its home state of Nebraska, at the national level in the United States, and in the foreign jurisdiction of Canada. Dirt Persuasion sheds light not only on the activism practices of social movements but also on the changing environments in which such actions are deployed. The KXL Pipeline fight represents a watershed moment both for U.S. energy politics and in the communication of environmental activism. The rural dimension of this environmental saga is critical: environmentalism must be understood from the perspective of the rural Americans who coexist with one of the planet’s most delicate ecologies. Populism, rhetorical appeals, strategic advocacy framing, and media framing all factor prominently within the pipeline debate—leading to a civic environmental persuasion built on the attributes of narrative, engagement, hyperlocalization, and bipartisanship in order to build broad stakeholder support and influence public policy.

An “entertaining” look at the psychology and neuroscience behind the act of influencing others (Kirkus Reviews). People try to persuade us every day. From the news to the Internet to coworkers and family, everyone and everything wants to influence our thoughts in some way. And in turn, we hope to persuade others. Understanding the dynamics of persuasion can help us to achieve our own goals—and resist being manipulated by those who don’t necessarily have our best interests at heart. Psychologist Kevin Dutton has identified a powerful strain of immediate, instinctual persuasion, a method of influence that allows people to disarm skepticism, win arguments, and close deals. With a combination of astute methods and in-depth research in the fields of psychology and neuroscience, Dutton’s fascinating and provocative book: Introduces the natural super-persuaders in our midst: Buddhist monks, magicians, advertisers, con men, hostage negotiators, and even psychopaths. Reveals which hidden pathways in the brain lead us to believe something even when we know it’s not true. Explains how group dynamics can make us more tolerant or deepen our extremism. Illuminates the five elements of SPICE (simplicity, perceived self-interest, incongruity, confidence, and empathy) for instantly effective persuasion. “[Split-Second Persuasion] offers some powerful insights into the art and science of getting people to do what you want.” —New Scientist

At thirty-one, Arlene Dickinson found herself stranded. Recently divorced, she had only a high school diploma, no savings and no clue how she was going to feed four young children. But just one year later, she was a partner in Venture Communications. Ten years on, she was CEO, poised to grow the business into one of Canada’s largest independently owned marketing firms. Today, as a co-star of the CBC hit Dragons’ Den, she is one of the country’s most sought-after female entrepreneurs. The secret of her journey from poverty to the corner office? The art of persuasion. Blending her own frank stories with compelling social science, she explains how to persuade both in the boardroom and in everyday life: the crucial importance of a particular kind of listening; how to get people to buy into your ideas; how to attract followers and deal with naysayers; the art of storytelling; how to turn mistakes to your advantage; and how to seize opportunities where others see only roadblocks.

This volume contains the first and last novels Jane Austen ever wrote: “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion”—both of which were published posthumously. Her first novel, “Northanger Abbey” is a satire of the popular Gothic novels of the time that has at its heart a woman who, unlike her peers who crave wealth or social acceptance, wants only for an authentic happiness based on morality. “Persuasion” is the story of Anne Elliot, an Englishwoman who is surprised to find that her family has rented their house to her now-married fiancé from seven years previous. The stage is set for humorous situations and the promise of a rekindling of old flames. Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was an English author known primarily for her novels, which critique the 18th century English upper classes and contemporary novels of sensibility. Her use of irony coupled with biting social commentary and realism have led to her wide acclaim amongst scholars and critics, her work contributing to the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Other notable works by this author include: “Sense and Sensibility” (1811), “Pride and Prejudice” (1813), and “Mansfield Park” (1814). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Persuasion means choosing good soil, good seeds and tending that soil with love and a desire to get a good harvest. Persuasion means constant work, believing and visualizing the fruits of your labor growing. Defending your work from predators and finally being able to enjoy in peace all that you have achieved. Whoever thought that persuasion is not work but only manipulation then I urge them to close this book right now, from the first pages, and look for a course on manipulation. You will see throughout this book what persuasion is and more importantly what persuasion is not. Persuasion is dedication. You won't be able to convince the person in front of you that you're his friend unless he sees that you care about him and are committed and willing to look out for his best interests. Of course, this is to your advantage too. If a salesperson doesn't try to manipulate potential customers into buying all sorts of products they don't need but puts himself in the position of a consultant then he will be able to offer the best advice to that potential customer and close the deal that benefits them, that's how win-win is easily achieved. The customer leaves satisfied because he was well advised and chose the best option he could find, and the seller is satisfied because he has made another sale and gained another customer who is likely to remain loyal. Your strength is your inner ability to leave your comfort zone and look for ways to improve your life by accepting hard work and dedication and turning them into personal investments. Persuasion can be interpreted as your power to make others see value, the value you place on certain things. You can create value if you have a definite personal value. Basically, you will make a transfer of value that others are aware of to a lesser or greater extent but which becomes an option. Your ability to turn that option into an investment in that person's future ensures your success in convincing them.
