Thus the student acquires a broader, deeper and more personal conception of the poet's aims and ideals than from a long Introduction. At the same time he is reading the best German, simple, entertaining, sparkling with wit and satire, or brimming with pathos. The illustrations of places or important persons described or mentioned in the selections give additional interest to the narrative.
