Correspondence from missionary Daniel Jerome Macgowan-- in China-- to John Torrey, dated 1853, asking Torrey to "offer my services to any Agricultural, Horticultural, or other Society which would take an uinteret in the introduction of plants from this side of the Pacific to the U. States." He has already approached the U.S. Patent Office but the compensation they offered was insufficient to make shipping anything other than seeds feasible. He goes on to reminisce about breakfasting with the Torrey family ten years earlier.

Correspondence from Daniel Cady Eaton to John Torrey, dated 1856-1860, discussing botanical specimens and endeavors, particularly in the realm of Eaton's specialty, ferns. Eaton regularly visits Gray in Cambridge and keeps Torrey abreast of his work with Gray and of the plants coming in from all points, largely from the many government-sponsored expeditions of that period. As well as books, the two periodically exchange numbers of the German journal Linnaea.
