Devotionals That Make the Spirits Soar J. Sidlow Baxter has endeared himself to thousands in the United States and Great Britain through his Bible expositions in the pulpit and in countless books. His last devotional, Awake, My Heart, was published in 1960. Now we are happy to present a new devotional from the pen of this much-loved pastor - a book of exposition and poetry that will hold a distinctive place in the Baxter literature. Drawing on his rich heritage in the British tradition of hymnody, Dr. Baxter has provided a poem or hymn for each devotional meditation. These hymns “all came to me more or less spontaneously during my own times of communing with our risen Lord," he writes in his Preface to Daily Wings. They will inspire his readers, even as they have given him “wings to my own spirit.” There is a devotional meditation for each day of the year. These are to be read, in his words, “unhurriedly,” for “to read any book of daily expositions hastily is fatal to its intended ministry.”

This is the first biography of Rt. Hon. William Wedgwood Benn DSO, DFC, first Viscount Stansgate, cabinet minister under MacDonald and Attlee, Air Commodore with active service in both World Wars, defector from the Liberals to Labour over his dispute with Lloyd George, and father of Tony Benn. Benn served in the army and RAF during the First World War (when he took part in the first parachute drop behind enemy lines at night) and in the Second World War he reached the rank of acting Air Commodore). His eldest son Michael, heir to the viscountcy, died on active service with the RAF, leaving his second son Tony to inherit the title and a seat in the House of Lords. Before his death, Tony Benn gave extensive interviews for this book. His brother, David has also provided interviews and material, as have other members of the family including Stephen Benn (now the third Viscount Stansgate). Extensive paperwork left by William Wedgwood Benn (now in the Parliamentary Archives) including his diary and unfinished, unpublished autobiography were all utilised in the construction of this biography. Alun Wyburn-Powell has managed to construct a biographical study of real force, weaving together snippets from Benn's own private papers with insights from his family and colleagues in order to create an authentic impression of Benn and the times in which he lived.

Download The Men Who Gave us Wings Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Why did the British, then the leading nation in science and technology, fall far behind in the race to develop the aeroplane before the First World War? Despite their initial advantage, they were overtaken by the Wright brothers in America, by the French and the Germans. Peter Reese, in this highly readable and highly illustrated account, delves into the fascinating early history of aviation as he describes what happened and why. He recalls the brilliant theoretical work of Sir George Cayley, the inventions of other pioneers of the nineteenth century and the daring exploits of the next generation of airmen, among them Samuel Cody, A.V. Roe, Bertram Dickson, Charles Rolls and Tommy Sopwith. His narrative is illustrated with a wonderful selection of over 120 archive drawings and photographs which record the men and the primitive flying machines of a century ago.??As featured on BBC Radio Surrey and in Essence Magazine.
