In 1845, an estimated 2,500 emigrants left Independence and St. Joseph, Missouri, for the Willamette Valley in what was soon to become the Oregon Territory. It was general knowledge that the route of the Oregon Trail through the Blue Mountains and down the Columbia River to The Dalles was grueling and dangerous. I wrote this booklet because of my concern for what I feel is a great problem in baseball today - the principal essence of the game is missing. The basic fundamentals of the game, those things which make a complete baseball player are not emphasized in baseball today. The lack of the BASICS allows the game to be played in a mediocre fashion. The art of cut-offs and relays requires team work and concentration. It requires complete knowledge of the BASICS and the discipline that goes with doing them over and over. Having an idea on how these are executed and its continuous practice, not only will make the player a better baseball player, but, will also give him a sense of responsibility. This responsibility will stay with the player for life.
