Ed Van Put begins this important book with the history of native brook trout and offers little-known details about their sizes, range, and demise from over-fishing, the growth of streamside industries, and the introduction of competitive species. Sweeping in its scope, Trout Fishing in the Catskills tells a thorough tale of the often tumultuous history of fishing in the Catskills. With a scope of over a century, Van Put tells of the Catskill’s frontier fishing beginnings and tracks the rise, fall, and eventual revival of the fisheries. Throughout, this is a history of people and methods as well as rivers, and there are profiles of Theodore Gordon, Art Flick, Harry and Elsie Darbee, Sparse Grey Hackle, and more. No serious trout fisherman, in any part of the country, will want to miss this pioneering portrait of a seminal region in American angling history. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

This is a book of essays about upland hunting experiences, bird dogs, noteworthy authors who wrote books about upland hunting, celebrated entrepreneurs in the shotgun-producing industry, favorite upland painters whose subjects were dogs and men in the field, fine double shotguns, a few short stories and several miscellaneous subjects, most related to the upland shooting life. This book also offers historical, environmental, philosophical and aesthetical observations of a long-time rural landowner. A fellow bird hunter, Dick Curriden, of Greenville, Maine also contributed witty and humorous words of a highly respected sportsman in the form of letters written to me over the years. The title, Meanderings of a Snake Meadow Editor, originates from the well-known 1925-established Snake Meadow Club, Inc., located in the towns of Plainfield and Killingly in eastern Connecticut, of which I have been quarterly newsletter editor for the past twenty-two years. This has afforded me the opportunity to write a column or two in every publication. These rather brief paragraphs in the newsletters have been expanded and, with few exceptions, resulted in the essays that comprise this book.

Just a century ago Eddie Foy was the consummate stage comedian. A versatile performer, Foy contributed to the development of popular theater from the Civil War to the Roaring Twenties, from poverty-inspired Irish two-acts to lavish musical comedies. This first-ever biography of Foy tells the story of his indigent childhood in New York's Bowery and in Chicago, his tough uphill climb as a "variety artist" at Western outposts, his success in vaudeville and Broadway, and his arrival as a national icon with the Seven Little Foys. Foy's career mirrored the growth of popular theater entertainment in America. Exhaustively researched, this work contains many rare personal photographs from the Foy family archives.
