Professor Jozef Gruska is a well known computer scientist for his many and broad results. He was the father of theoretical computer science research in Czechoslovakia and among the first Slovak programmers in the early 1960s. Jozef Gruska introduced the descriptional complexity of grammars, automata, and languages, and is one of the pioneers of parallel (systolic) automata. His other main research interests include parallel systems and automata, as well as quantum information processing, transmission, and cryptography. He is co-founder of four regular series of conferences in informatics and two in quantum information processing and the Founding Chair (1989-96) of the IFIP Specialist Group on Foundations of Computer Science.

The book deals with the most recent technology of distributed computing. As Internet continues to grow and provide practical connectivity between users of computers it has become possible to consider use of computing resources which are far apart and connected by Wide Area Networks.Instead of using only local computing power it has become practical to access computing resources widely distributed. In some cases between different countries in other cases between different continents. This idea of using computer power is similar to the well known electric power utility technology. Hence the name of this distributed computing technology is the Grid Computing.Initially grid computing was used by technologically advanced scientific users. They used grid computing to experiment with large scale problems which required high performance computing facilities and collaborative work.In the next stage of development the grid computing technology has become effective and economically attractive for large and medium size commercial companies. It is expected that eventually the grid computing style of providing computing power will become universal reaching every user in industry and business. * Written by academic and industrial experts who have developed or used grid computing* Many proposed solutions have been tested in real life applications* Covers most essential and technically relevant issues in grid computing

This SpringerBrief reviews the existing market-oriented strategies for economically managing resource allocation in distributed systems. It describes three new schemes that address cost-efficiency, user incentives, and allocation fairness with regard to different scheduling contexts. The first scheme, taking the Amazon EC2TM market as a case of study, investigates the optimal resource rental planning models based on linear integer programming and stochastic optimization techniques. This model is useful to explore the interaction between the cloud infrastructure provider and the cloud resource customers. The second scheme targets a free-trade resource market, studying the interactions amongst multiple rational resource traders. Leveraging an optimization framework from AI, this scheme examines the spontaneous exchange of resources among multiple resource owners. Finally, the third scheme describes an experimental market-oriented resource sharing platform inspired by eBay's transaction model. The study presented in this book sheds light on economic models and their implication to the utility-oriented scheduling problems.

This volume presents the accepted papers for the 4th International Conference onGridandCooperativeComputing(GCC2005),heldinBeijing,China,during November 30 – December 3, 2005.The conferenceseries of GCC aims to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of research trends on the theory, method, and design of Grid and cooperative computing as well as their scienti?c, engineering and commercial applications. It has become a major annual event in this area. The First International Conference on Grid and Cooperative Computing (GCC2002)received168submissions.GCC2003received550submissions,from which 176 regular papers and 173 short papers were accepted. The acceptance rate of regular papers was 32%, and the total acceptance rate was 64%. GCC 2004 received 427 main-conference submissions and 154 workshop submissions. The main conference accepted 96 regular papers and 62 short papers. The - ceptance rate of the regular papers was 23%. The total acceptance rate of the main conference was 37%. For this conference, we received 576 submissions. Each was reviewed by two independent members of the International Program Committee.
