The Chemistry of Iron, Cobalt and Nickel deals with the chemistry of iron, cobalt, and nickel and covers topics ranging from the occurrence and distribution of all three elements to their properties, allotropy, and analytical chemistry. Compounds of iron, cobalt, and nickel in both low and high oxidation states are also discussed. This book is divided into three sections and begins with the history of iron, along with its occurrence and distribution, allotropy, and preparation and industrial production. The nuclear, physical, and chemical properties of iron, as well as the biological importance of iron compounds, are also considered. Compounds of iron are discussed, including carbonyls and nitric oxide complexes. The next two sections deal with the history, occurrence and distribution, allotropy, analytical chemistry, and preparation and industrial production of cobalt and nickel, along with their nuclear, physical, and chemical properties. Compounds of cobalt and nickel are examined, from carbonyls and nitrosyls to cyanides and organometallic compounds. This monograph will be a useful resource for inorganic chemists.

Cobalt is a brittle, hard, silver-grey transition metal with high melting point, hard-wearing at elevated temperatures, good corrosion resistance and improved chemical, magnetic and mechanical properties. This book aims to provide in-depth study and analyses of various synthesis and processing techniques and characterization of cobalt that can lead to its increased applications in recent technology. This book presents deep understanding of the new techniques from basic to the advance level for scientists and engineers. The chapters cover all major aspects about cobalt and its application in material characterization with special emphasis on both theoretical and experimental aspects. This book addresses engineering professionals, students and materials scientists.

Cobalt (Co) was discovered by Swedish chemist Georg Brandt in 1735. Readers learn that cobalt is a transition metal, and that it is ferromagnetic. Only cobalt, nickel, and iron (and some of their alloys) can permanently align their atoms and become a permanent magnet. Cobalt can be found in rocky ores in Africa and Canada. It is very active chemically and forms many compounds, including cobaltous and cobaltic salts. Cobalt is used as a coloring agent, in paints, glass, ceramics, and enamels. A radioactive isotope of cobalt, called cobalt-60, can be used as a tracer in industry to show where pipes are leaking, and in medicine by doctors as a radioactive dye to trace out a person’s blood vessels in part or all of a person’s body in helping them to diagnose many kinds of illness.
