Excerpt from The Children's Library a Practical Manual for Public, School, and Home Libraries The brief chapters that follow may find their excuse in the fact that while articles almost innumerable on library work with children have appeared in library and other periodicals here and in America, no work has yet appeared in either country which attempts to systematise this fugitive information. I have long thought that a brief manual connecting the various methods would not be without its uses to those who are concerned as parents, teachers, or librarians with the reading of the young, and as no one better qualified has undertaken the task, I have presumed to write this little work. In the earlier chapters I have dealt with matters which should be known by all who conduct libraries whether in the school or the home; and in these I have endeavoured to avoid the special phraseology of the professional librarian. The later chapters describe practically all the methods in use in public libraries for catering for children. The whole work, however, is connected, and the non-librarian may, and I hope will, find it worth while to read it as a whole. I had intended to prefix a chapter dealing with the history of the child's book; but when I came to marshal my materials, I found it was impossible to produce anything like a readable and satisfactory sketch within the limits I had proposed to myself. This practitioner-oriented introduction to literature for children ages 5–12 covers the latest trends, titles, and tools for choosing the best books and materials as well as for planning fun and effective programs and activities. The third edition of Children's Literature in Action provides an activity-oriented survey of children's literature for undergraduate and graduate students seeking licensure and degrees that will lead to careers working with children in schools and public libraries. Author Sylvia M. Vardell draws on her 30 years of university teaching and extensive familiarity with the major textbooks in the area of children's literature to deliver something different: a book that focuses specifically on the perspective and needs of the librarian, with emphasis on practical action and library applications. Its contents address seven major genres: picture books, traditional tales, poetry, contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and informational books. Each chapter includes practical applications for the educator who shares books with children and who develops literature-based instruction. Chapters are enriched by author comments, collaborative activities, featured books, special topics, and activities including selected awards and celebrations, historical connections, recommended resources, issues for discussion, and assignment suggestions. This new edition incorporates the 2018 AASL National School Library Standards.
