Using the CMS detector at the LHC, a quantitative study of jet energy loss and angular deflection inside the high energy-density medium formed in PbPb collisions is made. Photons are used to measure the initial state of a color-charged probe while jet reconstruction is used to measure the final state. Significant loss of energy to the medium as a function of initial parton momentum is observed, while no significant angular deflection is found.

The collision of highly relativistic nuclei can produce a volume of high energy density which can be used to learn about the behavior of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at extreme conditions, such as those of the universe at times before and during the formation of hadrons out of quarks and gluons. This thesis presents experimental studies of jet-quenching phenomena in PbPb collisions at [square root of]sNN = 2.76 TeV, with a focus on the study of the energy-loss, namely the analysis of correlations of jet pairs as measured by the CMS detector at LHC. The implications of the results are discussed by comparison of simple models with data. It is observed that the geometrical configuration of the dijets and the nuclear collision region plays an important role in the correlations between the jets, and the set of CMS results reviewed can illustrate the dependence of the amount of lost energy on the length of the traversed medium.

This thesis presents the first measurements of jets in relativistic heavy ion collisions as reported by the ATLAS Collaboration. These include the first direct observation of jet quenching through the observation of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry. Also, a series of jet suppression measurements are presented, which provide quantitative constraints on theoretical models of jet quenching. These results follow a detailed introduction to heavy ion physics with emphasis on the phenomenon of jet quenching and a comprehensive description of the ATLAS detector and its capabilities with regard to performing these measurements.

In this thesis the jet fragmentation function of inclusive jets with transverse momentum PT > 100 GeV/c in PbPb collisions is measured for reconstructed charged particles with PT > 1 GeV/c within the jet cone. A data sample of PbPb collisions collected in 2011 at a center-of-mass energy of [square root of]sNN = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 150 [mu]b-1 is used. The results for PbPb collisions as a function of collision centrality are compared to reference distributions based on pp data collected at the same collision energy. A centrality-dependent modification of the fragmentation function is revealed. For the most central collisions a significant enhancement is observed in the PbPb/pp fragmentation function ratio for the charged particles with PT less than 3 GeV/c.

The kinematic correlations of isolated-[gamma]+jet scatterings in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at centre-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV per nucleon pair are studied for the investigation of the jet quenching phenomena in hot and dense QCD medium. The analysis uses collision data delivered by the LHC and recorded by CMS detector at CERN. The angular correlation, the transverse momentum ratio and the rate of mono-photon events are measured and their dependence on the collisional impact parameter is examined in lead-lead collision. The results of proton-proton collisions are used as the reference to which the lead-lead results are compared. Significant energy loss of jets induced by the hot and dense medium, and its gradual rise in correlation to the size of the medium are observed in lead-lead collisions, while a modification of the direction of jet axis is not detected.

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of jet quenching due to the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion and proton-proton collisions. This was done by comparing the transverse momentum, pT , ratio between a jet of hadronic particles, and a Z boson in both Monte Carlo simulations and real datasets, collected during the 2015 run of the Large Hadron Collider, using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector. The pT imbalance was studied in three di erent regions, namely for events where the Z boson had transverse momentum pT > 30GeV, pT > 60GeV and pT > 100GeV. The results show that there is a signi cant suppression of the jet pT in central heavy ion collisions compared to the proton-proton collisions, and the pT ratio decreases with higher initial pT.

Quenched jets produced in heavy ion collisions at the LHC and reconstructed with the CMS detector are studied to understand the nature of interactions between hardscattered partons and the simultaneously produced hot and dense medium, the Quark- Gluon Plasma (QGP). Jets are objects with color charge evolving through many energy scales, so are an excellent tool for scattering experiment in QGP, with potential to resolve quasiparticle structure and induce medium response. Redistribution of jet energy is quantified in two methods: measurement of transverse PT of final state particles projected onto dijet azimuthal axis, and measurement of jet production cross sections in PbPb and pp as function of jet radius. Missing momentum shows recovery of lost energy when moving beyond the jet cone for a fixed collection of jets, approaching full recovery at ... A jet radius scan of jet production cross sections shows consistent observed suppression in PbPb when compared to appropriately scaled pp at all radii. However, less suppression is observed with increasing jet resolution parameter R. In combination the results imply that while jet energy lost to medium interactions can be found when looking beyond the jet cone, the substantial changes to the jet population in pp at each studied R lead to sustained spectral suppression with even the largest cone size.
