While so much has been written about the English Protestant religious poets of the late 16th and earlier 17th centuries, there is relatively little study on the Catholic religious poets. Cousins fills this gap with his critical history of the Catholic religious poets major phase in the English Renaissance. In studying the Catholic religious poets from Southwell to Crashaw, this book focuses on the interplay in their verse between natively English and Counter-Reformation devotional literary traditions. Cousins puts forward particularly two arguments: that most of the more important Catholic poets write verse which expresses a Christ-centred vision of reality; that the divine agape receives almost as much attention in the Catholic poets' verse as does devout eros. In The Catholic Religious Poets Cousins defends the work of the Catholic religious poets arguing that this literary tradition deserves closer examination and higher valuation than it has usually been given.

Over the past decade Dana Gioia has emerged as a compelling advocate of Christianity's continuing importance in contemporary culture. His incisive and arresting essays have examined the spiritual dimensions of art and the decisive role faith has played in the lives of artists. This new volume collects Gioia's essays on Christianity, literature, and the arts. His influential title essay ignited a national conversation about the role of Catholicism in American literature. Other pieces explore the often-harrowing lives of Christian poets and painters as well as contemplate scripture and modern martyrdom.

"Barry Spurr's eagerly-awaited, definitive study of T.S. Eliot's Anglo-Catholic belief and practice shows how the poet is religion shaped his life and work for almost forty years, until his death in 1965. The author examines Eliot's formal adoption of Anglo-Catholicism, in 1927, as the culmination of his intellectual, cultural, artistic, spiritual and personal development to that point. This book presents the first detailed analysis of the unique influence that Anglo-Catholicismis doctrinal and devotional principles, and its social teaching, had on Eliot's poetry, plays, prose and personal life. An informed presentation and discussion of Anglo-Catholicism at the time of Eliot's conversion and through the subsequent decades of his Christian faith and practice. Significant new material from correspondence and diaries which sheds light on Eliot's thought, poetry and prose. This book is essential reading for all scholars and readers of T.S. Eliot and his circle; for students and devotees ofAnglo-Catholicism, and scholars of the interaction between literature and theology, especially in the twentieth century. It will also be of use to senior and Honours-level undergraduates and postgraduate research students working in the fields of Modernism and its principles and belief systems, and for students of religion, especially Western Christianity and Anglicanism."

"This booklet of poetry is as rewarding as it is challenging. To start with, it helps to know that much of the imagery stems from years of flying over the ice caps of Antarctica, but the energy propelling the reader comes from the mysticism of the saints and the Holy Spirit. The first reading (of this book) is merely an appetizer inviting the reader to return flights into ever-deeper prayer experiences. It is truly a work to be treasured and revisited often" (Most Reverend Robert J. Hermann, Bishop Emeritus, Archdiocese of Saint Louis). "The technical brilliance of the poems, while stunning, is even less remarkable than their mystical and contemplative content. Each poem is like a carefully polished jewel that refracts light in unexpected and beautiful ways; to examine these gems slowly is to learn something of contemplation itself. Mr. Smith has produced a work that will surely inspire other poets to greater excellence and other souls to look on God and His creation with new eyes" (Sister Maria Battista, Order of Discalced Carmelites [OCD]).
