Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Portraits Through the intercession of friends, Fai thorne was banished to France. He made Paris his home, and under the patronage of the Abb de Marolles, the great print col Iector, he studied constantly to improve and perfect his art. About 1650 he returned to London, married, and took a house near Temple Bar, where he engraved plates and sold prints - Italian, French, Dutch, etc., as well as his own. This was the period of his greatest activity. During the following thirty years he made a great variety of portraits, frontispieces, etc., retiring from print-selling in 1680 to a house in Printing House Yard, Blackfriars, where he still engraved plates and made a number of crayon portraits which were much admired. Faithorne died in 1691. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Scotch man, came to the colonies in 1715 and settled at Perth Amboy, then the capital of New Jer sey. After his first visit he returned to Europe and brought back to his adopted country a number of paintings, which thus formed the first collection of pictures in this country. Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Early English Portraits and Landscapes Lent by Mr. John H. McFadden: April the Twenty-Sixth, Through June the Fifteenth, 1917 It would doubtless be difficult to define just how greatly, the painters of this period in uenced each other in their work, but this much is certain: the power and in uence of a really great work of art is instant and far-reaching. The most potent in uence in the develop ment of art is art itself. For instance, the in uence of Constable upon modern landscape art is fully recognized by the ablest landscape painters of our time. His powerful works, painted with great directness and sincerity and possessing as they do the essential qualities of truth and harmony, have done much to stimulate and advance the art of land scape painting. It is at least interesting to note that wherever arthas risen to a high degree of perfection it has been advanced by artists more or less closely allied, and that the artists of great genius who were born in Eng land during the eighteenth century and who worked during the same period and under the same in uences, bear an interesting relation in this respect to other groups of artists of other periods and of other countries. The Greek sculptors, Phidias, Polycletus, Myron and Calamus, lived and worked during the latter part of the fifth century b.c., the golden age of Greek art. In Italy, in Florence and Venice, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Titian were painting their important frescoes. And the golden era of Dutch painting is compressed into the brief period between 1625 and 1670, the period of Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Pieter de Hooch, Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael, Gerard Terborch, and Jan Vermeer. In later times, the art of France was greatly advanced by two distinct groups of painters the group of 1830 and the modern impressionists. There is a prevalent impression, especially among writers, that a few great artists have been born at rare intervals, but it is very probable, if not certain, that the power and in uence in any one period of two or more men of great or exceptional intellectual power, acting and reacting through their art upon each other has been responsible for the extraordinary develop ment and achievement of art at certain times in the history of the world. Excerpt from Catalogue of Miniature Portraits, Landscapes, and Other Pieces Not far from the close of the year 1856, several of the friends or Charles Fraser, Esq, impressed by a sense of the value and number of his paintings, conceived the design of collecting together as many of them as possible, for public exhibition. This object they cherished not only for their own gratification, bat as an honor especially due to the Artist, a tribute to bis art, and an entertainment likely to prove at once gratifying and instructive to tho taste of the community. They saw great difficulties in the way, partly on account of the widely scattered localities in which the achievements of fifty or sixty years had been scattered, and partly from the reluctance of the proprietors of such treasures to surrender them to the contingencies of a general exhibition. Yet unwilling to relinquish their design, they proceeded, after having secured the hesitating permission and concurrence of Mr. Fraser himself in regard to the movement, to publish in the daily papers the following appeal: "Fraser Gallery. To the Public. It is well known that there are extant, in Charleston and its vicinity a considerable number of miscellaneous Paintings, including several hundred exquisite miniature Portraits, executed by Charles Fraser, Esq. An extensive and increasing desire baa for some time been entertained, that as many of these Paintings as possible should be collected at an early day, and exhibited to the public. By this method it is judged that an appropriate honor may be rendered to the revered Artist, and that his friends and other lovers of art may be indulged with the privilege, not otherwise to be procured, of beholding, at one favorable opportunity, the principal achievements of his long and industrious life.
