Computer-aided design (CAD) technology is essential for modern design and manufacture in the workshop. With software more practical, affordable and accessible than ever, there has never been a better time to learn how to get the most out of CAD. Whether you are new to using CAD or ready to try more advanced software, this practical guide gives a thorough introduction to the technology and how to greatly enhance design and manufacture in the workshop.Topics covered: techniques for designing and making artefacts in the workshop (not restricted to any specific CAD software package); guidance on software selection and general functionality; an overview of the conventions of technical drawing; case studies demonstrating the application of different CAD techniques for a range of projects. A practical guide to using CAD technology and how to enhance design and manufacture in the workshop, this is suitable for home metalworkers and model engineers and covers software selection; technical drawing and case studies using different CAD techniques.Superbly illustrated with 210 colour photographs and clear CAD diagrams.

Help kids build confidence and find their own creative voice through this collection of 25+ invitations for drawing. In Drawing Workshop for Kids, art educator Samara Caughey, founder of the highly praised family-centered art studio Purple Twig, shares drawing activities that support the development of creative, confident children ages 7 and up. All kids need to begin engaging in the pleasure of these simple yet inspiring drawing projects are a pencil and paper. Along the way, new materials are introduced, giving kids the opportunity to experiment with new techniques. Each of the three main chapters—drawing from life, drawing from images, and inventive drawing—focuses on techniques to explore, such as observation, mark making, shadow, line, composition, detail, contour, and perspective. Drawing Workshop for Kids strives to inspire children to investigate drawing and develop their own approach to art, building creativity and confidence.

This book contains a selection of revised versions of papers presented at the Third Eurographics Workshop on Intelligent CAD Systems, which was held at Hotel Opduin on the island of Texel in The Netherlands, April 3-7, 1989. The workshop theme was Practical Experience and Evaluation. It included five paper presentation sessions, each followed by a discussion. The workshop closed with a general discussion. The book is therefore divided into five parts: design process, system architecture, languages, geometric reasoning, and user interface. A report on the discussion session, written by the session's moderator, concludes each part. These reports are not intended to be exact records of the discussion, but rather the moderators' summary of their contents. The aim of the workshop was to share the experience the participants gained by developing intelligent CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems, and to evaluate the developed systems to determine which features were still lacking. The workshop was organized as the last one in a series of three workshops under the same title. The first workshop focused on theoretical and methodological aspects, resulting in a sound theoretical basis for intelligent CAD systems. Implementational issues were discussed at the second workshop, paying attention to systems developed with reference to this basis. The experience and evaluation showed a dual outcome. Firstly, it resulted in the development of a new generation of intelligent CAD systems. Secondly, it led us to the development of new theories for intelligent CAD.

Current CAD (Computer-Aided Design) systems, as used in many industries, are able to manipulate geometrical shapes very successfully. However, some would say that CAD means Computer-Aided Drawing'', i.e. CAD is only a very sophisticated drawing board, never intended to assist the thought processes of the designer. Automated design systems do exist, but these are limited to specific products with only a few varying parameters. This book deals with Intelligent CAD'', the concept of a system that could assist designers throughout the design process, deal with any object, and be connected to any other information processing system, such as CAM. The research papers collected here are from designers, and from researchers in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.
