Butterfly Wings is a book that was written following the loss of my father. During a time of great sadness and heartache, God's love, comfort, and peace began to flood my soul in those early days. Even in the midst of pain, there is beauty to be found. I began having personal experiences with butterflies. They just started showing up, and boy, how often they came in those early months. The butterflies provided such comfort and peace in ways that I cannot fully convey. I just know what they meant to me. The beauty of those butterflies got me thinking of the life cycle of the caterpillar, and once his job is complete, he blossoms into the beautiful butterfly. Much like the caterpillar, we too live our lives here on earth; and once our job is complete, we too, like the butterfly, begin our new life with our Lord and Savior. Our life is not complete; it just changes. We are given a new life through Christ. My hope is that this book will provide some comfort and a sense of peace to others dealing with the loss of a loved one. We will always miss our loved ones, but we know that they are always with us, in our hearts, in our thoughts and in spirit. Yes, my friends, even in the midst of pain, there is beauty to be found. In loving memory of my dad, John McDonald (1947-2015).

In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Few things in nature are more miraculous than the total transformation that takes place during the life cycle of a butterfly. Not only is the transformation fantastic, but the "LIFE LESSONS" that can be learned from this transformation are equally fantastic! Unfortunately many of the most basic facts about the butterfly life cycle are misunderstood and inaccurately taught. Follow the captivating and colorful butterfly life cycle from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis, to adult butterfly. But life is not always as simple as it may seem, as two little caterpillars soon discover. The two happy little caterpillars are enjoying a day of fun when they are confronted by butterflies from a neighboring tree who tease the little caterpillars for not having wings. Inspired and encouraged by their mother, the little caterpillars find hope and courage that one day they too will be as beautiful as their mother. In addition to a wonderful and captivating story, each beautifully illustrated page is loaded with amazing facts that will have you saying, "I never knew that!" For example: Did you know that the term "cocoon," when referring to a butterfly, is not correct? Do you know what the difference is between a cocoon and a chrysalis? Did you know that the chrysalis of a butterfly, often incorrectly referred to as a cocoon, is not "spun" by the caterpillar? It's true! A butterfly does not come from a cocoon. Furthermore, a chrysalis is not spun by the caterpillar. Do you know the four stages of the butterfly life cycle? How does the transition between each of the four butterfly life cycle stages occur? Why does a caterpillar eat only leaves and plants, and yet when that same caterpillar becomes a butterfly it can sip only sweet nectar for sustenance? How far will a caterpillar travel in its lifetime? How long does a caterpillar remain a caterpillar? What does a caterpillar do when it gets thirsty? How long does an adult butterfly live? These, and many more amazing facts are taught alongside a wonderful and inspiring story. Written by top-selling Amazon's Choice author Lance Douglas, this informative, educational and uplifting book promises to be a favorite that you and your curious children will never forget. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write the ending. Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart! Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome—is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. As a grounded theory researcher, Brown has listened as a range of people—from leaders in Fortune 500 companies and the military to artists, couples in long-term relationships, teachers, and parents—shared their stories of being brave, falling, and getting back up. She asked herself, What do these people with strong and loving relationships, leaders nurturing creativity, artists pushing innovation, and clergy walking with people through faith and mystery have in common? The answer was clear: They recognize the power of emotion and they’re not afraid to lean in to discomfort. Walking into our stories of hurt can feel dangerous. But the process of regaining our footing in the midst of struggle is where our courage is tested and our values are forged. Our stories of struggle can be big ones, like the loss of a job or the end of a relationship, or smaller ones, like a conflict with a friend or colleague. Regardless of magnitude or circumstance, the rising strong process is the same: We reckon with our emotions and get curious about what we’re feeling; we rumble with our stories until we get to a place of truth; and we live this process, every day, until it becomes a practice and creates nothing short of a revolution in our lives. Rising strong after a fall is how we cultivate wholeheartedness. It’s the process, Brown writes, that teaches us the most about who we are. ONE OF GREATER GOOD’S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR “[Brené Brown’s] research and work have given us a new vocabulary, a way to talk with each other about the ideas and feelings and fears we’ve all had but haven’t quite known how to articulate. . . . Brené empowers us each to be a little more courageous.”—The Huffington Post

First published in 1915, Knulp was Hesse's most popular book in the years before Demian. This is the first edition in English. Knulp is an amiable vagabond who wanders from town to town, staying with friends who feed and shelter him. Consistently refusing to tie himself down to any trade, place, or person, he even deserts the companion who might be considered Hermann Hesse himself the summer they go tramping together. Knulp's exile is blissful, gentle, self-absorbed. But hidden beneath the light surface of these "Tales from the Life of Knulp" is the conscience of an artist who suspects that his liberation is worthless, even immoral. As he lies dying in a snowstorm, Knulp has an interview with God in which he reproaches himself for his wasted life. But it is revealed to Knulp that the whole purpose of his life has been to bring "a little homseickness for freedom" into the lives of ordinary men.

Pitch dark… You can’t see your hand in front of your face. You don’t see anything... When you don’t see, you don’t know, you aren’t known. Something like nothingness... But suddenly, as if you’ve pushed a button, everything becomes illuminated, visible, known... What a beautiful thing it is to exist. Living is a beautiful thing indeed. Life is the button of that light. Our Lord gave us life while we were far from life and friends. He gave us both life and friends... What a beautiful thing life is... Whatever is beautiful, we know it through life; we taste it through life; we experience all the beauties of life. We also find ourselves with life. Life is such a beautiful thing... It’s beautiful like air, like breathing... It’s beautiful like feeling as if you’re drowning, surfacing quickly and taking a deep breath. We save ourselves from drowning with every breath. It would be so good if we could enjoy being kept alive with every breath... How to be grateful for living; how to pay for the blessing of life. Getting used to things makes us blind, we can no longer see. Although the blessing we take for granted is staring us in the face, we throw it into that pitch darkness. When you can’t see it as a blessing, you can’t be grateful... Is there a cure for habituation? Yes, there is. Let’s close our eyes for a few seconds. Let’s open our eyes as if we were using them for the first time after the darkness... What is it like to see, to be able to see? What would you miss if you didn’t see? You can apply such a method of ‘breaking habituation’ for every blessing you have received and everything you love. This is how you can tear the veil of habituation... As the poet says: “Living is such a beautiful thing By understanding, like a master, a book Like a love song Living in wonder like a child...” As we get used to something and take it for granted, the taste, meaning and beauty of seeing it for the first time disappears. We can tear the veil of habituation and renew the meaning of life in our minds by changing our perspective. There lies the taste of life… … Isn’t this important too? The perfect level of life is the life of heaven. Our most vital issue is to turn this world into heaven on the one hand, and to do things that will elevate our lives to heavenly life on the other hand. Man was created for happiness in two worlds... However, happiness on earth and happiness in heaven are not the same. Since opposites coexist in the world, it will be unrealistic to seek full happiness. However, man can find peace with a ‘faithful attitude’ among the waves, turmoil, changes and the hustle and bustle of the world. One should live life to the fullest... He should increase his good deeds. He should fill his life with beauty. Living is really beautiful if you live like this... One should not forget the one who gave this beautiful life. We should not forget that we have Lord, who loves us more than anything He created. He is the one who creates love, He is the one most worthy of being loved; we should not forget it... Flowers, roses, especially butterflies; the stars, the moons, the sun, the seasons... one should live by appreciating them. In other words, we should give them their due on behalf of Allah... Living is really beautiful when you live like that... Otherwise, you see that living has become a dungeon and something meaningless... … Inshallah, “Living is a Beautiful Thing” will touch hearts and lead people to good deeds... May Allah be with you.
