Excerpt from Bulletin of the California Academy of Sciences, Vol. 2: 1886-1887 The species assignable to Lithocharis and allied genera are extremely abundant in California and are also very numerous individually, so that a review of the forms occurring here, although not so desirable as a general revision of the North American species, is, at the same time, amply sufficient to form a systematic basis upon which to found such an extended work, and probably loses little of what importance it may possess from the omission of species occurring east of the Rocky Mountains, as these are comparatively few in number and not as yet sufficiently collected. Belonging to the region here considered, there are described below twenty-five species, most of which are rather local in habitat, although a few have an extended range. In regard to their favorite haunts, little is to be said; they frequent the margins of ponds and water-courses, and are found amongst decaying vegetable matter, roots of grasses, etc., in stony localities, although more abundant in the deep ravines so characteristic of the Coast Mountains.
