Unity. Jesus prayed that his followers would experience it. The apostles worked hard to achieve and maintain it. Christians today rarely enjoy it. God's desire is for our churches, marriages, families, and interpersonal relationships to be characterized by unity and agreement. But all too often, strife and discord prevail instead-why? Because we fail to realize that our differences-be they doctrinal debates, generational clashes, or other personal preferences-don't have to create division. Unity and unison are two entirely different things. The key to practicing biblical unity is to "build a bridge and get over it!" Drawing insight from key passages of Scripture as well as years of leading a dynamic and diverse congregation, this author explains in very practical ways how we can improve our relationships and deal constructively with our differences and disagreements as followers of Christ. Paul Earl Sheppard has been senior pastor of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, California since 1989. Under Paul's visionary leadership, this church has become one of the largest and most racially diverse congregations in northern California. He serves as speaker for Enduring Truth, a popular daily radio program heard on stations and networks around the country. A native of Philadelphia, Paul has studied at the University of Pennsylvania, the Center for Urban Theological Studies, and the Southern California School of Ministry. He holds a Master's degree in Ministry and a Doctorate of Divinity. Paul sits on the board of directors of NRB (National Religious Broadcasters) and is a highly sought after speaker and conference leader. He was married to his wife, Meredith, in May 1982. They have two adult children, Alicia and Aaron.

Personal adversity is unavoidable. We live in a fallen world, and evidence of this is found in the challenges that we face in our daily lives. Personal stresses, marital difficulties, emotional trauma, disease, and death seem to meet us at every turn. When personal tragedy strikes, how are we to respond? Why do some people seem to rise above such difficulties while others seem to crumble under life's pressures? Drawing from his own personal tragedy and the lessons learned in the face of death, Dr. George Harris leads the reader on a journey of hope and encouragement and shows how to turn personal tragedies into a bridge to triumph and strength. As a leading biblical expositor, Dr. Harris's unique insights into Scripture provide a biblical basis -- as well as a practical guide -- for Christians in the face of hard times. George H. Harris has been a pastor for 53 years. He is a native of Arkansas and a graduate of Oachita Baptist University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, and Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta, GA. Pastor Harris was pastor of Castle Hills First Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX for 28 years. He presently pastors the First Baptist Church in Kerrville, TX. He is the author of five other books and has served as Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, as well as at Criswell College in Dallas, TX.

“A treasure...a wise and entertaining book that should appeal to the spiritual pilgrim in all of us, no matter what the faith and no matter whether believer or nonbeliever.” – Chicago Tribune The New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and Jesus: A Pilgrimage turns his attention to the relationship between LGBT Catholics and the Church in this loving, inclusive, and revolutionary book. A powerful call for tolerance, acceptance, and support—and a reminder of Jesus' message for us to love one another. In this moving and inspiring book, Martin offers a powerful, loving, and much-needed voice in a time marked by anger, prejudice, and divisiveness. On the day after the Orlando nightclub shooting, James Martin S.J. posted a video on Facebook in which he called for solidarity with our LGBT brothers and sisters. "The largest mass shooting in US history took place at a gay club and the LGBT community has been profoundly affected," he began. He then implored his fellow Catholics—and people everywhere—to "stand not only with the people of Orlando but also with their LGBT brothers and sisters." Father Martin's post went viral and was viewed more than 1.6 million times. Adapted from an address he gave to New Ways Ministry, a group that ministers to and advocates for LGBT Catholics, Building a Bridge provides a roadmap for repairing and strengthening the bonds that unite all of us as God's children. Martin uses the image of a two-way bridge to enable LGBT Catholics and the Church to come together in a call to end the "us" versus "them" mentality. Turning to the Catechism, he draws on the three criteria at the heart of the Christian ministry—"respect, compassion, and sensitivity"—as a model for how the Catholic Church should relate to the LGBT community. Thomas Black is Vice President of Engineering at Fairfield Electric Cooperative in Blythewood, South Carolina. He is a member and deacon at Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood. He is married to Cynthia, a wonderful wife of eighteen years, and stays busy raising two teenagers, Shelley and Jordan. In 2010, he served as the project coordinator for the Gavilan-Patastule Suspended Bridge near the town of Matiguas in Nicaragua. Thomas graduated from the University of South Carolina at Lancaster in 1989 with an Associate in Science, and from Clemson University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the state of South Carolina. Losing two high school friends in 2009 would cause Thomas Black to reflect back not only on his childhood but on how short life really is. It would cause him to take a fresh look at his own life, at the accomplishments at his job, and ask himself a question: Is this it; is this all there is to lifemoney and daily routines? Then, as he sat at the computer late one night in March of 2010, searching his mind for answers, he fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, somewhat startled, he quickly realized what had just happenedJesus had given him a life vision. He prayed that night for God to give him another mountain to climb and a physical sign that he was being called out of the boat. The answers to those two questions came, with God not only showing him the mountain and the physical sign he had prayed for but taking him on a faith journey that would change his life forever. Then in September, after venting in an e-mail to his pastor about his unanswered prayers for another church to become involved in the mission project and for the fundraising to end with a miracle that only God could do, God provided answers to both of those prayersthe next night! For Thomas, 2010 would quickly become a spiritual marker. Ten One-Dollar Bills not only tells the story of this incredible journey but reminds us that life is a journey, not a destination, and as with any journey, serving the Lord + loving people = purpose. We are all challenged to get out of the boatmove beyond comfortlove without limitthat is where well discover not only who we truly are, but the bounty of Christ. REVIEW: Read the book from cover to cover. An absolutely amazing and compelling story. The courage you have shown in your walk with the Lord is very inspiring to me. And when reading it, in between tears and joy, all I felt was Gods healing grace. Thank you so much. Ken Frantz
